Rear knocking driving me crazy
« on: 14 October 2013, 21:00 »
Knocks and rattles annoy the hell out of my in any car and over the last few months the MK4 has developed a very annoying noise from the rear.

It's a creaking/squeaking/knocking noise.

It usually does it going over speed bumps or any kind of bumpy road, it also does it on a flat straight road if I weave around a bit. In other words when the rear suspension is put under load or there is any chassis flex.

When it first started I thought it was inside the car due to it being quiet but now I'm pretty sure it's outside. Rear axle bushes are about 6 months old, it's not the shocks as I swapped the JOM rears for standard ones and the noise is still there.

The only thing I can think of is rear top mounts, but they don't look like they'd perish like Mk2/Mk3 ones would.

Anyone got any suggestions? It's almost at the point where I cannot stand to drive the car due to the noise

The nut on the top mounts?

I asked the garage exactly what it was and he answered with "just a loose bolt"
Didn't charge me ether

The nut on the top mounts?

Hmmm, I tightened the nut using mole grips to hold the shaft so it's probably not as tight as it could be...reckon it's worth buzzing them up tighter with an impact gun?

It's going up on the ramps tomorrow to change a leaky driveshaft seal and fit new lowering plates for my rear bags to get the back down some more ,so i'll whip the rear shocks off again and tighten everything properly.

I'll report back with an update!

I would try new rear top mounts plus tighten the top nut a little more.

on my recent rear beam bush swap to vrs ones we found a squeek which originally thought was coming from shocker boots but it was the bush as the beam went up and down it squeeked now bearing mind the side in question the bush was in fine working order......

Also found a small squeek from spring rubber mount when moved it squeeks

Right, removed rear shocks and top mounts, retightened the top mount nut using an impact wrench and it's still no different.

I've ordered some new top mounts which I'll fit on Thursday if they're here in time.

I'm running standard gti bushes, how did you diagnose it as the bush?

As I'm on air I don't use the rubber spring mount, I have a bracket to hold the top of the bag instead:
