I've had a look on my car, using an iPhone 5 with iOS 7 all I get in the MFD is a list of last calls - no contacts list either. May well be an iPhone thing as they don't play well with anything other than Apple products.

Yes, mine doesn't import all of my contacts either. Not that I mind as I only really call the missus from the car!

Well, I've just been contacted through twitter by VW when I asked the question as to why the contacts were not showing up in the DIS display, (like they did with the previous generation RNS-510 and RCD-510 units), and they confirmed they are not supposed to show. Apparently if you want to go through your contacts, they must feel its safer to take a hand off the steering wheel, and look down at the infotainment screen, and click and scroll to find a contact whilst driving

How the heck can this be safer than having both hands on the steering wheel at all times and using you fingers to search whilst occasionally peering down at the instrument screen ?

Sorry, but I think VW have dropped a huge clanger on that one.

That sucks

Can you get a list of your favourite contacts? Or is it recent calls only?

Boggles the mind why they are taking backward steps with something like this.
On Order: 02/05/13

Yeah, seem crazy that VW actively expect you to mess with the infotainment screen whilst driving, when on earlier generation models, the contacts list is easily available in the phone menu of the DIS. Why did they feel the need to change this, and who the heck thought this would be a good idea ?

Definitely a backwards step from the MK6 / Scirocco platform. Maybe we should all complain and see if it can be added as a software update ?

Well, I've just checked the part numbers in ETKA for the control unit for the Discover Pro in the Golf, vs the Technology pack in the Audi A3 (8V) - which is also an MQB platform car, and apart from the VW to Audi signifier code at the start, they both seem like the same part number.

Also, a couple of guys over on the Audi-net forums have confirmed that not only do the contacts come up in the DIS and are controllable via the MFSW buttons, but also, that they can play ipod/iphone playlists when connected to the AMI (our MDI) socket.

Looks like they have kept the goodies for Audi ?

I feel like I'm on a one man crusade against VW here

It's the same issue with navigating SD cards etc - the MFD just shows the track playing info and you cant navigate to new folders etc unless I'm missing something.  Would much prefer to have the option not to use the touchscreen when moving.

Sorry guys, now I've got my car I know the post I made about displaying contacts on the mfd was b*llocks! I think I was getting confused with an audi demo I had.
It seems you have very little control over the media unit from the steering wheel and I am disappointed you can't navigate folders and select contacts, music tracks etc. Seems a very basic omission to me to have to use the touch screen all the time...
