Loads of GTDs around Durham and Newcastle areas, Quite a few Rs too, Not that many GTIs though.
On my way to work I normally see 2x black, 2x red GTDs,  2x  light blue Rs and a dark blue R.

Beautiful blue R at Toddington services yesterday (Monday 14th July) at about 6 ish, with a private plate that started with an R and had VWW at the end....

Simply stunning!

Regularly see 2/3 different GTD's per day on the way to/from work, and have seen 2 R's in the last week. But only 2 GTI's in the year since they've been out.

The GTD is expected to be more common I guess, but am surprised at the R as you don't tend to see cars like that around my way very often. GTI could become fairly rare if people aren't bothering with it and going straight for the R??

Maybe price has a lot to do with it.
I've just specced up a GTI against an R and the R is considerably cheaper over the shorter periods.
I also flung in the GTD just for a full comparison.

When you simply take into account the OTR price, the R does look terrific value for money against the GTI/GTD. For an extra £3.5k your getting 300bhp, 4wd, dual DRl's and quad pipes. Why oh why did i not wait an extra 6 months

Craig that might be an on the road price but you are actually cheaper over the term buying the car on a pcp.

The R for example would cost you £1700 less than a GTI over 24months.  That should cover the lousy MPG and more.

That's amazing pal. In hindsight if I had known that the price differential was going to be so marginal I would without hesitation have waited for the R. I've never really fancied going down the PCP route but when you look at the figures I would have seriously considered it this time round.

The funny thing is when I come to trade in my GTI in a few years I don't know if I would consider the R. There are a few other things that have caught my attention such as the M235i and new TT. I love the new cayman but way out of my budget so would have to be a pre owned one.

Yeah it's definitely part price related. I actually ordered an R end of May, but changed to a GTI as I've been offered a new job with more travelling. The R was cheaper over 4 years, although I believe the GFV's have now been changed due to the leasing fiasco.

Having seen 2 R's in the flesh, must say I prefer the looks of the GTI. The R is a little too understated for me, although every other aspect is pretty amazing performance wise.
