Hi, it's a pretty straight forward job to change the turbo. There are 2 main ways of approaching it, either work from the top, removing the manifold, disconnecting the lines, disconnecting the downpipe and lifting out the top. The second popular approach is to remove the o/s driveshaft, remove lines/downpipe/tip and drop the turbo out the bottom of the car.

I sincerely doubt it could be done keeping the manifold on. It needs to unbolt from the manifold, and be pulled upwards. The exhaust manifold would simply be in the way.
I thought Volkswagens were supposed to be reliable?

Yes, can absolutely be done with the manifold on, but it is a lot simpler to undo the 13 manifold nuts and make the job easy for yourself by removing it.

do it from the top and remove the manifold unless you have a ramp to use. I've done it both ways I wouldn't say one method is any easier than the other
