Mk6 Golf R brakes on a Mk5 GTI
« on: 01 September 2013, 10:13 »
Hey. A simple-ish question. If I got hold of a set of 2012 Mk6 Golf R calipers, lines, discs and pads, can these be mounted to the stock hub of a Mk5 GTI? Would I need other parts too (carrier bolts, fittings, different alloys)?

I've been searching the web and various forums but nothing so far on Golf R brakes, only R32. Any guidance or pointing in the right direction is much appreciated.

UPDATE (19/11/2013) - Are there any real differences (or benefits) of fitting rear R32 calipers/discs to a GTI? Seems to me that the rears are only a few MM bigger on the R32 so may just replace the lines with SS ones and be done with it!

Mk5 R32 and Mk6 R brakes are one and the same albeit painted a different colour so will fit fine to a mk5 gti

Am I right in thinking the R brakes are bigger than stock GTI ones? Also, has anyone seen this done on a forum yet? Would like to see someone else's expirence with this job.

Yes the R/R32/S3/Cupra brake set up is bigger than the stock gti version... 345x30 compared to 312x25
It's been done lots of times by many others that I know of personally and is a reasonably cheap and popular mod, had a set on my mk5 and have transferred them onto my mk6 as well..

Is it a straight swap across? Just bolt the callipers, discs and pads in and connect the brake lines and bleed? I'm assuming I'll need a bigger carrier bolt to compensate for the extra thickness of the discs? Also, which lines should I use, the R ones or the stock GTI ones?

Yes a straight swap, you'll also need the bigger dust shields if you wish, around £15 a side last time I got them,
I have always fitted new caliper mounting bolts as iirc they are stretch bolts and shouldn't be re used, as for lines you'll need to use the R version

Are these parts easily available through normal car parts retailers (GSF, Euro Car Parts ect.)? You've been such a massive help with this! :-)

I've always sourced parts via the VW dealer themselves or my local branch of TPS (you'll need a trade account or just sweet talk them into helping you with the latter though)
Also if you can find a set from a Mk2 Leon Cupra/Cupra R then it will save you the cost and work having them painted or coated to red if you want them to match the oem rears as the Leon came with red calipers from the factory unlike the R with black

I'm going to keep the callipers black with the R logo and leave the stock rear callipers red as I will eventually colour code the rears when money allows. Do the bigger brakes fit under stock 18" Monza alloys, or will I need spacers or after market alloys?

They'll fit fine, will even fit under stock 17" monzas and the gti 18" space saver no problem
