that was my initial thought too, sounds like a misfire from coilpack. ring vw and see if its been in for the recall or if your elageble for the recall

This was my initial thought seeing as you have lost servo assist,ie big air leak in servo/pipe work to it.

I had the brake servo pipe split on mine and yes it ran rough but yours is a lot worse.

Duff coilpack would be my guess.

Don't pin your hopes up on the coilpack recall, this is a quote from one of my previous posts on this forum about the recall

Quote
took it in to the dealers today, after a prearranged appointment, 5 hours later collected the car.. my coil packs are the unaffected lot. No recall for me, not just that though, the women was listing all these "problems" my car had as if my wheels was about to fall off.. and gave me a sheet with the prices for these problems. One of them was the oil breather pipe had split - wanted £134.28 just to replace it  i don't think so. I then told her i was a trainee mechanic and her face suddenly dropped. For obvious reasons. Anyway, as i started to pull away from the dealership i noticed the car was running even more worse then what i took it in as, i knew what it was. Got back home to find one of the coil packs was unplugged  so i'd been running on 2 cylinders and doing 18mpg just because they wanted more money it seems?  just trying to source a coil pack for my car then it will be running perfect again.

the day later i bought a brand new coilpack for £10 and it was running perfect again
