Gearbox output flange
« on: 06 August 2013, 03:47 »
Hi all.

I have suffered a bit of a mechanical breakdown today.
Some how my drivers side inner cv has worked all the bolts loose and detached the driveshaft.
Luckily not too much damage done as I was only doing about 20. That said it has chipped my gearbox output flange.

Question is how are these removed? And is it an ok job or will it be quicker to remove and replace the gearbox. I have a spare box kicking about.

Thanks guys.

IIRC remove the cap inside the flange and if it's an 020 I think there is a circlip, or it might be a bolt.  Buzz it off, or remove the cirlip, with the box tilted away from the flange you're removing, then pull it off.  Be careful that the seal is not damaged when you fit the replacement and away you go.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

hi guys

ok I managed to remove the flange by remiving circlip and using 2 bolts and some blocks to carefully pull it out. it has the green oil seals and a big spring on the back of the flange.

also took flange off spare gearbox.  problem is I cannot compress it back in enough to get the circlip back on. any suggestions?

Large G clamps should do it.

Also very common for the inner driveshafts to come lose. Take note people...check them bolts!

Thanks for the replies guys.
spent a hectic 2 days diagnosing and fixing this. In the end had to swap out the gear box as the bearing in the diff was damaged (where the cups go in).

managed to build a make shift tool to pull cups into diff using a ling bolt some wood and a large socket!!

bit gutted having to change gearbox but I guess I have the old one for spairs now.
