changing of clocks

looking at putting a new set of clocks of my golf as mine are playing up,,,now can i just get any set out of a mk4 or do they have to be a certain type and do they need to be programmed after

You need to match the part number and they need coding.

Dealers, VAG specilaist or maybe a local member with VAGCOM

Removing the clocks is a two minute job and the part number will be on the back

The only thing with doing at the dealers is the mileage will not be changed,
What ever mileage is on the clocks you get will be whats shown.

My dad recently had his swapped as the red bit in the middle faded,
Dealers told him they where unable to change the mileage on used clocks as it was illegal to do so.
They  charged him £50 to code them.

We have since put the mileage back to what it was on the original clocks.

You can change the mileage with VAG Tacho

Not sure how its illegal to re-do the mileage on used clocks to show what your car is actually on 

Its obviously illegal to knock miles off your current mileage but if you are simply putting in new clocks and setting the correct mileage I cant see the problem

Im sure mileage correction people would do it..... 

I know dealers can legally reset your delivery mileage on a new car; well they used to be able to do so as long as it was under 100 miles 

Equally you would be fine if the used clocks showed MORE mileage than your current ones; its when they show less you'll end up in trouble

like rhys said the dealer tool can't change the mileage once its over 100km, legality has nothing to do with it you're just representing the true mileage of the car. If you have a laptop you can get the tools needed for less than £30 off ebay. Then you just need some research/reading and some bravery!
