You guys have pushed me over the edge  I've just emailed the dealer to see what he can do discount wise.  I'll probably get a follow up phone call tomorrow.

Here's a question, sometimes they use finance to leverage a discount as they know they'll get commission on it.  What's to stop me (legally and otherwise) taking the finance, but then cancelling it in the cool off period, and just settling up?

I've wanted a GTI for about 15 years.  Could this happen???

Drive the deal will always have best price but I got around 8 to 9% from my local dealer because they were good to deal with I wanted to order through them.  If they spin you the we don't discount the gti line go elsewhere or play 2 off against each other.

Also you didn't mention if you had driven one yet ? If not, do that and you will be sold I think.

I took finance on my current MK6 GT as was getting a deal and free servicing - rang up and paid it off a couple of days after collecting the car

I was exactly like you. Since I was a kid I've always wanted a Golf GTI. Now I'm fortunate enough to afford one. I did test drive one and after that I was smitten. My order followed the very next day

Just another mention for DTD. I expected to get myself half way around the country to pick up the car. They used a dealer under ten miles away. All communication and payments done via the dealer. I reckon they have a network of dealers and it saves all the negotiating hassle. I got around £3k off a completely standard car when I ordered in May.

Cheers for the info guys.  I was about to order an A3 1.4, as a sensible car, but I went on a track day just before in a R35 GTR and I remembered how fun driving could be, and I started thinking about the golf again.

I shall see what the dealer can do, I have a figure in my head, if he can get close then I'll take him up on the offer, if not it's DTD for me.  I WILL order something by the end of the month.

Depressingly...I had to get to 40 before I could enjoy all this. Sigh.

In your negotiations, be persistent, they will try to batter you down. Get your p/x value sorted first before talking discounts and know what a "fair" price for it should be with a Glass' valuation (there's a free valuation on the Vauxhall website, but you might get pestered by people wanting to sell you a Vauxhall as a result). No point getting a great discount on the new one if you're getting robbbed on the old one. If you are getting options you're in a better position for discount - not many people here have gotten good % discounts on a vanilla spec GTI/GTD, the fully loaded ones seem to have far more scope for a potential 10% discount.

Some dealerships just won't give a discount out of principle, especially if they've been selling a few without discount already. If that's the case then you are both wasting your time - walk away.

I would also recommend ensuring they fix the quote on your part exchange price, instead of waiting until you take delivery and valuating it then.  It will be a long wait for you like the rest of us, and your car will depreciate in the mean time. Also When I ordered my car I got a Glass's valuation and Parkers.  I know Glass is what dealers use for valutions but Parkers was £1K more and I managed to use it to push the p/x quote up further.

Also I completely agree with the comment on playing two dealers off against each other.  I went to one and they said no discount.  So I went to another and said I had been to other dealers and asked what they could offer on the price.  I managed to get discount.  Dealers will try to play you off with the we don't give discount ploy until you start suggesting you will go elsewhere where someone will give it to you.  Part of the fun of buying a car is making the sales staff sweat for the likely of getting your order.

Totally agree with you

One dealer I spoke to said we don't need to discount and by lunchtime I was up to 2k off because I told him another dealer already offered that.

Then in the end he pissed me off by saying he wasn't going to get involved in an auction !  I said to him isn't that your job to sell me a car !?

So when I got the most I could out of him I took the email to a much better dealer and they matched the overall deal.  Thanks very much.

This first dealer I had bought 2 cars from previously and was affronted by their poor service.  He wanted me to drive 50 miles so they could look again at my 9 year old bmw despite the fact it was there when I had a test drive..and nobody looked at it.. Then he basically said they should get my business because they gave me a test drive.. Until I pointed out the other dealer threw me the keys and said take it all afternoon compared to the 20 mins I got..

When you experience that service they don't deserve your money so shop around and enjoy the haggling experience.. Nothing worse than ordering a new car then feeling you didn't get a good deal..
