Seriously tempted...
« on: 17 July 2013, 19:19 »
Hello all,

I was in the process of buying a spec'd up Audi A3 1.4, because I wanted to be "sensible", but the voice from the corner kept whispering.."golf gti, golf gti..".  I've tried to buy a golf gti a few times over the years, but it always fell through due to cost etc.  Having driven a mk5 and a mk6 I know how nice they are to drive, I've sat in the mk7 so I know it's quality on the inside, and I'm pretty sure it will be good to drive too.

Out of curiousity I priced up a mk7, and was surprised to find it's significantly cheaper in terms of tax and insurance over the mk6.  The fuel cost is pretty much the same as my current Honda Civic Type S, so I might go for it.

Just want to know a few things;

1. what is the real world mpg? I will open a can of worms here with people saying "if you're worried about mpg don't get a gti", but at the end of the day I have to spend it so I might as well know upfront what it will cost to run.
2. what's the experience of unwanted attention, carjacking etc.  From what I heard the audi's/bmw's are more likely to be stolen.

Drive the deal have a saving of about £3.5k with the adaptive chasis and performance pack.  I can't believe a dealer will get close to that.

Thanks.

Hi Mistertee

Welcome to the forum

To answer you questions

1) Real world mpg your probably looking at 35mpg on average maybe slightly more depending on your driving style
2) These type of cars are always likely to attract unwanted attention but that's what you pay your insurance for. I would recommend GAP insurance for piece of mind

A dealer will struggle to match DTD prices but you will still get 8-10% discount if you shop around

You should go for it, you won't regret it. Just the lead times that are a killer just now

In my 1.8 vtec civic I get 29 around town, and 40 on the motorway, 35mpg isn't actually too bad!

The lead times on an a3 are 3-4 months.  Sounds like the golf are similar.

That's 5 people who have said golf now.. maybe they are right. :)

No maybe's about it, of course they're right

The sensible and safe option from an economy point of view is no doubt the A3 but sometimes you have to have a bit of fun and live a little

Yep, don't get an A3, the technical term for them is "minging"

Blimey, I can get better than that in my 8 year old Mk5 GTI, let alone the new Mk7   To be honest, I didn't even consider any other cars at this level, because none are going to offer the same looks, performance, comfort, toys, versatility, and driving pleasure that the new GTI offers.

I've also ordered via DTD and first GTI, a car I've always wanted. Expect 37 or so mpg I reckon...

36 mpg from my first tank full.

But then the air con has been on full blast the whole time and its still loosening up.
( I had to have a few 'acceleration tests' as well).

Nearer 40 average for normal driving I expect.

Awesome car, just amazing.
Mk7 GTI. DBP, DCC, Winter pack. Mine since new, July 2013.

Was just gonna put a call out for you matey. Funny.

36 mpg whilst still running in and with a/c on full blast is very encouraging indeed!

GTI all the way...YOLO and all that

40 mpg is achievable in the MK6 GTI in the right conditions so I would expect even better from the MK7 once the engine has done some mileage, although it's usually around 32-35 mpg with the odd blast on a journey.

BMW's of a certain age are being stolen because of an alleged interior sensor flaw allowing thieves access to the OBD port so they can program a new key and drive off. It's supposed to have been rectified through a dealer update but know one seems 100%.

Most thefts reported of these cars seem to be key theft from the owners house.
