Bi Xenon headlamps
« on: 15 July 2013, 14:48 »
Hi guys. Anyone else think that VW missed a trick on the GTI and GTD xenon headlights. As I understand it, all the action takes places in the outboard lens (DRL, low and high beam), and the inner "light" AFAIK just has a small LED marker light in the centre to act as a parking light.

Wouldn't it have been way cooler for the inner lens surround to also be a DRL (similar to the BMW -angel eyes), or even make the inner lens a high beam Xenon ?

As it is, whilst I love the look of the lights (almost look like a piece of jewellery) the inner optics just seem to be wasted ?

there is actually a little LED "dot" on the inner unit. And the static cornering lights are hugely impressive IMO, really useful.

That's exactly my point Joe, whilst I agree they are one of the best looking lights on any current vehicle, the inner optic only has the small LED light, nothing else. Surely, the inside bezel should have at least been another DRL or something ?

I agree, and have often wondered why the inner bezel isn't part of the DRL setup as well, but it is what it is.

DRL's round the inner indicator lamp would mean whichever one would have to dim or turn off when indicating. That can look quite cool, but un-necessary I suppose.

Separate xenon main beams don't work that well. There is a sight warm up time with xenons before they give full power after switching on. Bi-xenons work with just one light source that is on all the time and the beam pattern altered from dip to main beam by means of a shutter behind the lens. That way, once on dip, when you hit the main beam switch, bang they're on.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
