Temperature gauge 130 (Max)
« on: 14 July 2013, 21:38 »
GOLF MK4 2000 1.8 gti

Fuses are fine.
Blowers push hot air.
Plenty of water in coolant.
Pipes have water in them.
FANS DONT WORK!
Cambelt and waterpump just been replaced

Temp usually hovers around 90c but was stuck in traffic in stop/start and it shot right up to 130 (Max) and then stayed there for quite some time and didnt go below 90C until driving and then it went around 70/90 (normal)

Dont ever recall hearing the fan start on this car (2 month) temps are fine when driving normal conditions etc as I assume the airflow is making the fans move.

Temperature sensor? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK4-GTI-AUDI-A3-AUDI-TT-TEMPERATURE-SENSOR-C408-/190286786160?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c4df9ee70

What else should I check for / need?

Thanks, Just had cambelt done recently with a new waterpump fitted also!

i see the faq states Coolant Temp Sensor – This part is prone to failure. 2002 and older vehicles had a bad coolant temp sensor from the factory that VW updated. It was a black sensor, and now the good one is referred to as a green top coolant temp sensor. Block 011 in the VAG COM can monitor coolant temp for erratic readings. This is a 7$ part. Do not change while engine is hot.

Can I get this from vw?

I had the water pump replaced (Brand new) the coolant isnt draining but when I press the pipe it gushes back up so there must be water inside the pipes? Its just not drinking any?

Check the fuses ontop of the battery that's one for the fans if that's not blown I would say you need new fans.

Do you have climate? If so they have a history of burning out the fan modules. There was a fix on ukmkivs which involves adding in a box, I'll have a search for it when I get home (if I remember)

I would check to see if fans work by unpluging the sensor on the radiator and bridging the plug with a wire ,if they work then its the temp sensor in the rad thats gone. Not sure if I have climate or not! Have hot/cold blowers that just say hi/low and a botton that says econ auto etc.

Trying this now : I would check to see if fans work by unpluging the sensor on the radiator and bridging the plug with a wire ,if they work then its the temp sensor in the rad thats gone.

Cant get to it :'( any other things to try in the meantime?

I replaced mine with a new sensor, its not hard to get to by the top of the engine. it your fans not working or the water pump ,even new parts can fail.  easy test is let it tick over until its over 90 and pop the bonnet and see if the fans are on and the rads hot ,if not its the fans if the rad is not to hot its your water pump.

You have climate control. Like I said very common for the fan module to blow

This should help you out a bit
