can you put a photo on where one can see the full profile?

they normally 'sack' over time ... old ones being about 2cm shorter than new ones. from the gap on the second photo I would hazard a guess they are just on the edge... since you've taken the strut out might as well replace them... steering alignment is a lot more than those two strut mounts.

I don't have a photo, and i've just put them back on temporarily while the new top mounts come, and surely i dont need to do the steering alignment since  i've only altered the camber?

if you've had it out and not marked it so it goes to exactly same spot (camber) then you've changed the geometry => alignment. the track rod ends probably won't need to be moved but camber will have to be adjusted.
