vulcan isn't a bad bike. If you're only gonna use it on road i'd go for the voodoo marasa. It has a solid front fork which will save you around 1kg in weight. I got the 2012 version of it for my missus and i was very impressed by it.

I would avoid a MTB at all costs if 90% of your riding is road work, way too heavy and hard to ride.

Get a good quailty hybrid, which is as strong as a mtb plus will still cope with canal paths etc but much easier to ride on the road.

Look at Trek FX7.3 or FX7.5, Giant Escape or Giant Rapid

the marasa is a hybrid and very light. Also are you gonna ride it in all weathers?

if you're only gonna ride it in dry weather (with the odd exception) then disc brakes aren't necessary. You can spend more on the running gear/frame.

Voodoo Bantu are pretty good bikes. They have some decent gear on for the money they cost.

I have a Cannondale SL and I love it.

Ride it to the train station every morning. Its light and does well off road when I take it out on the evenings and weekends.
