Recommend me a bicycle
« on: 11 July 2013, 21:40 »
So with the Anni nearing its doom, I am going to start cycling to work. Thing is, I haven't got the foggiest of what to get. I have about £350 to spend, my route is mainly pavement/road, but I would like to use the bike to do trails every now and then when I'm off for a ride.

What can anyone with more knowledge than me suggest?

When I was commuting by bike to work I bought a second hand single speed bike. Nothing to look at, less parts to maintain and served me well.
Mine had drop bars however if you want to ride trails as well you may be better going for flat/riser bars.
Something like this would be what I would be looking at

That's a brilliant I,e for the money, I used to ride to work many moons ago best advice I can give you is try to steer away from bikes with rear suspension as much as its temp for the trail etc rear suspension take away the momentum from your pedalling, I know this sounds strange but its true, rear sus bikes are no good for roads. I'd start with the basics, have front suspension, have disc brakes and go from there.

It's like you stole my old jump bike and stuck some 26'' rims on it, it's specced virtually identically.(i was running 24''s). Bloody good bikes these and wish I still had mine.

Seeing as you're ditching the car completely you may still need some load carrying ability from time to time...
