£4k is a pretty big difference and with a remap you can get the GT to GTD performance levels.

But the GT looks too much like a normal Golf for me, even with 18's, whereas the GTD looks like a sporty diesel and the interior has those finishing touches that take it that step above.

Plus a remap takes it to near GTI performance figures which is a selling point.

In leather yes.... but not liking those fabric seats at all!

Although mine is leather, I think VW leather in general is a bit overrated and not particularly hard wearing.

I do like the standard fabric on both GTI & GTD but I know a few people who think it isn't befitting of a pseudo premium car...

I always try the highest model in the range when buying a car, as otherwise every time you see the better model when driving yours you get that pang of what you should have bought.

Thankfully ed35's and .:R's are rare as hens teeth round my way

This.  If you already love the GTD, then get it as you'll wish you had later on.  GT is nice but a little dull by comparision, GTD stands out more from the crowd.  If the GTD has been well looked after and serviced properly, is the higher mileage really such an issue.

IMHO the biggest issue for me here is price.... The GTD just does not excite me enough for the prices it commands.  Not taking anything away from the car at all, but i just cant understand it when compared directly to the GT both in terms of price and spec! (Not sure why but the GTD's are often speced quite poorley i find i.e. no cruise control etc).  I have had my GT for a year now and never really felt as if I have wished I had bought a GTD.

Infact i remember on one occasion I parked next to chap in a silver base model GTD with the 17inch alloys and definatly felt mine looked more classy.  I appreciate there may be some bias in this but the little touches like the Graphite Blue pearl paint work, 18 inch vancouvers, yeti tips on my GT left me with smile on my face seeing it parked next to the silver GTD

I do think the GTD is a very nice car, but for the money I think I would rather have A4 S Line or a 3 Series M Sport.

The reason my previous car ended up being a Leon FR was price, I got GTD spec ( and then some) for the price of a GT, was a no brainer and the car was great

i currently own a gt which has more spec than my mates gtd, his gtd isnt any quicker, they seem very similair in performance,
ive added a few bits to my car to enhance it  and am told it looks more desirable to my mates  if like me you have a budget, then go with a gt, i just feel that the difference to me wasnt worth all the extra cost. just my opinion matey, you have to go with the car you feel is right for you.

Thanks for all the replies, its a tough one, there's a GTD with 45k and toys for £10,000 but its a 4 hour travel...

Looks great (it has 17s though), only drawback is its a completely different value so the amount of loan ill be taking would be less... Leaving issues if I arrived and it was a dud.

This ^^^^

There are some very nice GTD's out there just IMO they are not far enough away from the GT to warrant the extra £££'s

Think people seem to have the blinkers on here when comparing GT to GTD...

Base GTD v base GT is no contest, 30bhp for a start is noticeable from the off, plus the exhaust looks cheap as hell on the GT.

Fair enough you may get a few with higher spec for decent money, but they will depreciate more and be less desirable further down the line.

If you cant justify a GTI for whatever reason, buy the GTD and you wont regret it...
If I would have settled for a GT I know I would always be annoyed seeing a GTD driving past.

Good shout on the Leon FR though, I tested one prior to GTD and they are as good in all but interior finish, but loads cheaper!!
