GT or GTD

Hey guys, in a bit of a predicament... Love the GTD, interiors bang on and its a great engine.

But... Can get GT's with much better spec and less mileage for the same price.

Ideal world would be RNS510, parking sensors and cruise on an affordable GTD but there just aren't any with less than 70k on the clocks. Whereas you can get GT's with about 40k.

Been offered a mint GTD with 60k 59 plate for £12,000 but after retrofitting itl come to quite a bit extra...  Or I can get a GT with all the trimmings.

I know through a dealership the GTD would be easily £13,995 as it is in better condition that others I've seen in dealerships... But 12k for a car with basic kit is alot (forget the fact its a VW).

What's the general consensus? Drawbacks to me of the GT are seats, air con and steering wheel IMO...

GTD all day long....you will regret not getting it when you drive past one.

Im not a big fan of diesels but if you have to go down that route then at least make it half cool.

The GT looks a bit boring, and no one will be impressed, not even yourself. If you get the GTD you will be happy straight away and save up and add the rest later.

Quick remap and you will be running a cool 200BHP

Thanks for the quick reply, I had a mk6 GTI for a few days last year I think that's what made me love the interior I guess. The petrol is definitely quicker, but the Gtd definitely has a big kick... As you say revo quote petrol GTI power from the gtd with a stage one.

I'm slowly selling it to myself lol...

I have a mk4 AGU with anny wheels to sell to pay for the retrofit stuff....

I always try the highest model in the range when buying a car, as otherwise every time you see the better model when driving yours you get that pang of what you should have bought.

Thankfully ed35's and .:R's are rare as hens teeth round my way

I bought a GT as back then, the GTD was still a bit new and used prices were commanding a much higher premium. It was for my wifes birthday, so I thought that the GT would do. If it would have been for me, I would have saved up a little longer and got the GTD.

The GT does look very ordinary, however when it is super shiney with it's Vancouvers sparkling, it does stand out a bit more, but not like a GTD would. Swapping for a touch screen radio helps to lift the dash board, but the standard air con knobs look a little basic.

Unless you can find a very well speced GT, I'd go for a GTD. All the the extras you would like can be retro fitted, so they can all come in good time as funds allow.

I say go for the GTD otherwise you will see it and want it later!

I would also consider a GTI as well, you might find one at a better price to the GTD.

GTD all the way, my mate has a GT and its very dull in comparison to my GTD.

I think it really depends what you want and what your personal tastes are.  For me i actually prefer the look of the GT with some 18inch Vancouvers but i do prefer the understated look.  I found the GTD looking a little too much like its got bits stuck on if that makes sence?

Having drove both the GTD did not 'feel' that much quicker than the GT but the biggest factor has to be price!  I know When i bought my GT I was also looking at similar GTD age/mileage but there was a £4k difference in price!  Thats the bit I just cant understand particulalrly because at least the GT had 18inch vancouvers, RCD 500, Bluetooth, Front+Rear Park sensor, Cruise Control.   The GTD had none of these, as a person who like there toys on a car I just could not justify the price difference for a car that has a spec thats not as good?

Conclusion: For me at least I would rather a higher specced GT than a low speced GTD

£4k is a pretty big difference and with a remap you can get the GT to GTD performance levels.

But the GT looks too much like a normal Golf for me, even with 18's, whereas the GTD looks like a sporty diesel and the interior has those finishing touches that take it that step above.

Plus a remap takes it to near GTI performance figures which is a selling point.
