Help! Horrible paint.
« on: 04 July 2013, 21:14 »
The last owner of my Golf decided to try and 'home spray' two doors a front panel and the front 3rd of the bonnet, presumably in an effort to give the 12 year old paint work a bit of a face lift, however in doing so he has managed to make the sections incredibly matt and it looks really nasty.

So my question is, what canI do to return it to the best that I can do without re-spraying or vinyl wrap etc as I am on a tight budget I have £40-£50 to spend.

I have tried cleaning, polishing, waxing and T-Cuting but none of this touched it. I took it to a local body work shop to see what they suggested and they managed to fetch the paint off of the front panlel and it looks great with the 'chemicals' that they have. so I only have left the doors and part of the bonnet left to do however he quoted me £450 to do the doors and the bonnet with the chemical rub down and then a wax and buff, I explained that this was too much and asked if I could buy the 'chemicals' to do it myself but they said no.

Does anyone know what they are likely to be using and if and where I can get some, or any other ideas?!

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jack.

Get some new panels!

If it is all matt then it will be the paint that needs re doing I'd think.

I was hoping it wouldn't come to that!

I guess I was after something that would strip that layer of paint off that he'd put on.

any ideas how much the panels would cost, that's presuming they were the same colour?

Jack.

If your car is like a patchwork quilt of naff paint, its likely to be just aerosol paint, this can be wiped back with some Paint Thinners on a rag, be warned that you may uncover some repairs that were better left covered up!
If you try this route, then its an outside only in the fresh air exercise, with gloves goggles and a mask!

sand it down with a rotary sander, prime and paint. Be warned whatever the colour it will not match the decade or more faded paint on your car, especially if is red. It will slow down your good friend Mr Rust if done properly. easily should fit your budget if you can get hold of a disc sander for free/cheaply. Paint, primer and lacquer-20-30. sanding discs-10. Other amenities-10.
