This will be my last post regarding the bloody starter motor!!

Fitted a new starter, works OK in the morning when i go to work, but in the evening coming home it takes a bit longer to start then any other short trip it barely turns over at all! Next morning i try it, everything is fine....any ideas? A bad earth? Battery?

This saga has to be put to bed!

Could be a number of things. Even the crank sensor. I would get it scanned if possible.

Get it scanned / buy a code reader before doing anything else.

Its a 97 MK3 Cabrio. The starter turns really slowly, sometimes not at all until i try again, then it fires up with zero problems. It starts in the morning no probs, but if i go on a short journey in the day (less than 2 miles) it won't start up normally 80% of the time. It's really random.

Sounds like battery to me mate. Not getting enough charge on short journey.

Try a bigger battery that won't get drained during the 2 mile journey. If it starts OK after the 2 miles, your current battery is not getting enough charge. Eventually, even the bigger battery will get drained so you really need to get this sorted out.

I thought that too but it doesn't make sense that overnight it seems to 'charge' itself and be fine for the morning.
I've booked it on to get a look on vag-com so will let you know what it comes up with.
