So Craigw orders his 5 weeks after me from same dealership, ( mine in Merylee) and his is in transit, and mine won't be built for a fortnight .

Strange allocation system.

Perhaps you'd like to lend me yours till mine arrives in September.

Backhanders always work to speed up the process   I must admit I have no idea how the allocation is working. I went to other branches of this dealership before I had placed my order and to say they showed very little interest is an understatement. The guy who I have been dealing with had been first class.

Very interesting to note as well that my dealership were pretty much one of the first in the UK to get a demo. Seems as though this particular dealership have a very good relationship with VW.

Speaking hypothetically... I wonder how VW would react if someone were to make a complaint about this?  I suspect they'd just fob it off with excuses about different spec, but what they should really do is properly look into why some orders take so much longer than others which seem to 'skip the queue'.  Perhaps there is an innocent explanation, but perhaps they need to make some changes.

It wouldn't be so bad if they could actually provide roughly accurate estimates for delivery, but because they had us all expecting delivery around early August and then changed this to "delay of unknown length" with some cars coming through much earlier than others they've angered a lot of people.

I think we'd all be a bit less pissed off if we'd known what we were getting when we signed the deal.  And that means either telling us straight that "some cars will be build fast, others will take months longer with no fixed date and its near enough random which your order might turn out to be" or to get their system working so they can provide a decent estimate.

And its not enough for them to cop out by saying "can take anything up to 20 weeks" (and for some of us its well over that anyway) because that would still cause irritation when some come in 10 weeks and others in 20 weeks.  The estimate needs to be accurate or they need to be honest about how absurdly random the lead times really are.  Feels like mis-selling to me.

The VW system seems bizzare doesn't it?

Surely from the moment a car is ordered it must sit somewhere in a que (or one of several ques for colour/Nr of doors/DSG or Manual/spec etc...), and that que must surely be visible to the factory if nothing else?

Am i right in thinking the BMW system allows for 'real time updates' of the build - sure i'd read it somewhere, if so VW (indeed the VAG group going on my experience with Audi) need to develop a new system!

If VW were just more transparent and honest about individual customers delays i'm sure people would be more forgiving.

Dirvy: Did you make any changes post-ordering and perhaps CraigW didn't? Perhaps some changes for a piece of kit that may be on the hard to get a hold of list, like a rear view camera (or perhaps you had the camera originally and CraigW doesn't)?

Same thing happened with me. I was first in a 3 car queue, with mcmaddy (and my dad behind me (in that order). Mcmaddy made a few changes and added the rear camera which appeared to have pushed him to the back of the queue. I asked for a colour change and they changed the colour of my dad's in error instead. By the time they realised their error and changed mine, they couldn't change my dad's back and it was built on BW25, pushing mine back.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

The only option i added later on was the winter pack (fingers crossed it is on the car) and i think was within 2 weeks of placing the order. Your right, I didn't spec the camera, maybe that does have something to do with it?

No no changes. Was tempted after review of PP, but between not wanting to possibly cause de lays, and spend another grand that I don't think I'd notice ( let's not start that argument again, plenty threads for that)..

Only up is trade in locked in, and my wonderful mk 6 will be paid off.

This all sounds like normal operational procedure for VW.
I went through exactly the same in 2004-5 and 2009-10.

Why don't VW give a f*#k and try to reduce lead times? I'm not talking 6-8 weeks, but 12 weeks from placing order to taking delivery seems reasonable to me.

Why should they give a f**k when people keep going back to them time and again...

I think it's actually quite good press for VW to have a car in such high demand.

The GTI is and always has been a limited production model, if the headlines start appearing talking about long waiting lists then that is going to help boost not only GTI but standard Golf sales.

I think VW actually manufacture this situation with the GTI for their own long term sales and brand image.
As Snoopy says it was the same for the mk5 and mk6 and VW ain't stupid.

Mk7 GTI. DBP, DCC, Winter pack. Mine since new, July 2013.
GTI no. 4. Golf no. 5.  VW no. 7.
