Whats this then!
« on: 04 June 2013, 15:58 »
Have had my first gti a couple months now, getting to know it and enjoying it immensely. It's a 2010 4 door.

I have a strange engine noise now that I can best describe as air escaping from somewhere within the engine.
When the engine is under load it is audible, if I don't push it too much it doesn't kick in. It's also audible if I'm coming down a hill with my foot off the accelerator or something like that.
I've tried to capture the sound of it, you can hear it best on the first rev in this video.

Anyone know what it is before I take it off to VW?

as first it sounded like you were describing boost leak, but if you off the pedal downhill, i dont think it cant be that.

Have you felt any loss in power?

And strangely, does all you heating and air con work ok?

Heating and AC fine. No loss of power. I just drove it back to London from Devon and it ran wonderfully! Oil and water temp completely normal. Checked levels on both - fine too. MPG normal also.

On the first rev, theres a 'wheeze' of sorts that I'm finding hard to capture with my camera phone.

Possibly sounds like your Diverter valve is bleeding off charged air.

When you come off the throttle the charged air is recirculated back into the intake to prevent it from surging the compressor side of the turbo.

Or it's simply just induction noise...

It's hard to tell from videos over the sound of the engine, you won't get better clarity.

you would be right if it was always accelerating, but it happens when he's not acceleration....so it cant be the DV

My firstt thought was the diverter valve but now im thinking crankcase ventilation valve.
Take the engine cover off and see if you can hear the valve clacking.
How many miles does the car have on it?
