DIY dual 044 surge tank
« on: 02 June 2013, 16:19 »
Well I was looking at the Integrated Engineering one thinking there a good bit of kit but at pretty much £600 there was no way I was going to buy one!

So was looking at it thinking I could make something similar, so thought id give it a go

Bosch 044 with the sheet metal

cut to size for the tank

Then made some stands for the pumps to sit on and welded them on

Welded up the tank

Then onto the front plate out of thicker material marked and drilled

Cut out the holes for the pumps and welded bolts onto the back

I also cut and drilled a front plate which will clamp onto the front to allow to get the pumps in and out and keep it sealed

Drilled holes on the back one for a feed from the standard pump, one for the return from the rail and the last the overflow back to the tank.

Both pumps in, how it will look

There is rubber washers between the plates and have used teflon tape on the bolts so should be air tight. Sealed it all in and filled with water to test. There was a couple of leaks on the tank but sorted now and no leaks at all.

Thinking about putting some pipes in off the pumps with filters on the end but unsure yet. Would be something like this

Either that or just leaving it with the banjo bolts

Thats as far as ive got so far, next will weld the top on, fill it and pressurize it to see how it holds up. If all good can clean it up and give it a coat of paint and ive got a surge tank for the price of the pumps

I don't even get the idea of a surge tank  :embarrassed:

Top class build quality, great engineering.

Dual to cope with high power, the standard pump will fill the tank and because its small it should stay pretty much full all the time so will never get fuel starvation even when the main tank is nearly empty. The pumps being submerged will keep them cool prolong there life as well.

That would be telling

Keeping the next project secret for now until I've got a few more bits and done a bit more research.

With this setup there will be no issues with fuelling no matter what power I go for!

isn't this what the swirl pot is for in the standard setup?

have you got uprated fuel pumps that will not fit in the standard swirl pot?

I could be grasping the wrong end of the stick here?  at most your going to need a 4bar fuel pump IMO which iirc you can buy ones that fit in the standard swirl pot, and I cant see you empting the whole swirl pot before your petrol levels out when cornering hard?... unless your going around a round about repeatidly?

as I said I could be getting confused here so please explain if im going completely off track...
