In that case spanking 4k on a mk2 to spank as a daily is crazy

May I suggest a Fabia vrs diesel for 3k, then put the rest into the mk3 if it's being kept for that reason.

I do want a mk2, i just don't want to spend four grand and find it's just to much to ask a twenty year old car to do ten year old car duties.

I understand what your saying and i've had a good look through the skoda/vw/audi family but the mk2 is an itch i need to scratch but i won't ruin one just for the hell of it.

Well just like a mk3, you buy on shell condition first,

After that it's down to budget and personal requirements.

Tidy gtd on eBay at the moment, better suited maybe ?

Have a look at mobile.de for Golfs of the relevant age.  There's a lot of stuff we didn't get. Importing isn't too challenging either.

Golf3 Syncro TDI? VR6 Syncro estate? Golf2 G60 Gti? Passat G60 Syncro?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight for 2-10 people? PM me.

I've been looking at 8v and 16v mk2's, i don't know what the strengths and weaknesses are of these engines and i've seen high mileage but well maintained 16v's in my budget and low mileage 8v's.

Both engines are very strong.  One doesn't have enough valves.  The other has an accident waiting to happen attached to it.

Is this the crunchy second gear that gets mentioned in several adverts, and is it that serious?
