Mk2 owners opinions needed please.
« on: 01 June 2013, 23:29 »
In a few months time the m.o.t on my mk3 runs out and i'm planning on laying it up long term and replacing it with something else, now its either a nice mk2 8v or 16v or something completely different as i don't want another mk3 and i've had a go in a mk4 and didn't really like it, i'll have around £4000 to spend and the question is could a mk2 at this price range cope as a daily driver in all weathers and living outside or would this be asking a lot of what is quite an old car now?, i'm quite happy to maintain it properly and it would probably do about 100-150 miles a week...sensible answers please because it really is a choice between a mk2 and leaving the VW fold.

A mk2 doesn't have the modern comforts of a mk3 but they are capable of daily use .
My worry of dropping £4k on a mk2 daily is you are in the realms of an absolute minter with low miles. If you are using it daily it will be difficult to maintain the condition.

Well i've spent a fair amount of time scanning the various ads and it seems you need to spend up around this level to get something rust free and well looked after and my motivation is that i don't really like new cars much and i reckon that if i don't experience mk2 ownership now the prices will start rise out of my range.

I've actually been putting some serious thought in to this  it would have to be my daily and not a toy, we do have another much newer car (the wifes) for long distance/tip trips/school run duties so the golf wouldn't be subjected to hard use, would just be mainly me using it to go to work and run around in and it would have to be totally standard.

I've owned a mk2 gti 8v before, and then I put a VR lump in it and then I sold it.

I own a mk3 8v now and to be honest the MK3 is what I like. I wouldn't buy another MK2 in my life. Yes I'll admit it's much more popular than the MK3 but I still prefer the MK3 over any MK2.

The dash styling compared to the MK3 is sh!te, and the mk3 feels very modern.

1.4tdi Polo will give you much the same sensation and use teeny tiny amounts of fuel.  Get some good dampers on it and rebush it and you're fit for a fun ride.

Alternatively head off to Germany and get something interesting and Golf-shaped for your budget.

Never heard scrapping a car referred to as 'laying up' before.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight for 2-10 people? PM me.

Would it be worth going to Germany to find a better mk2?, i don't mind if its worth the effort and the mk3 isn't getting scrapped just going to sleep in the corner of a friends warehouse for a while, i had a good look at what it'll need for the next mot and it realistically needs about £500 spent which i think is just money down the drain.. it has sentimental value.
