How is an Audi A3 S-Line with the same 210ps engine not the same as the GTi, in the same way the 170ps diesel version is the same as the GTD.
You choose your badge and pay your price.
I am a bit puzzled though that people who own a GTI hail certain audi models as being superior quality...
Being on my 2nd mk6 Golf, I can honestly say that IMO, Audi have by far superior build quality. My previous golf was continually in the dealership and on the back of a pick-up truck with major faults, one of which was very dangerous and this is not even considering the countless rattles with only 10k miles.
My current GTi has only just hit 3000 miles and squeaks have started on this one..... Not good for a car with the list price of over £27k. I won't be getting another that's for sure
well mate, sh*t can happen. my mate has bought a brand new TT 3 years ago and has spent over 4K on fixing things that really should not need fixing for a 40K car. I spent 33K on my gti and had to change mechatronic last year. My wife's Polo though, poor as it might be on the interior, bought new for something like 8K, has not caused the slightest problem in over 6 years of daily driving.
I test-drove the new A3 the other day as the missus is on the lookout for a new car, i wonder where on earth do you see that car being superior to the GTI. Sure, if you pay and have every single extra there is on the catalogue, maybe it becomes competitive quality-wise, but you should also weigh your options and depends on what would you like a car to do. If you can find and show me another car that offers the combination of quality / power / comfort that the GTI does within the same price range, hats off to you.
