My MK7 GTI Specced Up.
« on: 27 May 2013, 20:40 »
Not that I'm buying a MK7 Golf (quite happy with my MK6 Golf Match) but was at a loose end so specced a GTI up to my taste.

Love the Limestone Grey & 'Santiago' alloys.

I loved the look of Limestone Grey in pictures and in the brochure and initially ordered mine in that colour. When one arrived at the dealership a day or two later the fleet manager gave me a ring and suggested I pop in to have a look and see if I still wanted mine in that colour.

IMO, it looks completely different in real life, they should have called it Limestone Bronze! I swiftly changed my colour to pacific blue, and have subsequently changed it to Tornado Red and am sticking with that now!

I have seen a few Limestone Grey Golfs on the road since and am glad I changed my order!

I really wish that something like the Indium Grey was available on the mk7 Golf. I think the mk7 colours are pretty weak to be honest!

Tungsten silver is a great colour too, the wife has it in her cab. If I decide to go down the GTD route it will be Tornado Red though.

Really not keen on Limestone Grey, especially on a GTI.

Never order a car colour you haven't seen in the flesh.

When I worked at BMW as a junior salesman back in 2005, when the new 3 Series was launched. People went for this colour called 'Arctic'. It looked really nice in the brochure. When it turned up in the flesh though..eeuugh. Some guy actually hated it and was really disappointed.

Damn!  You actually make me feel bad for this poor guy.  That's the big problem with new cars.  When you aren't getting one you know exactly what you want, but when it comes time to hand over big bucks there is all this fretting and self doubt.  Do I want reflex silver or tungsten silver?  Its suddenly a matter of life or death, though you know in reality there is little difference.  5 inch Nav or will I regret not getting the 8 inch?  Can't add it later, oh no oh no, which to choose?  Does it really matter!

I totally can't handle this, which is why its so much worse that the delivery is yonks away.  All this time to chat on here, have you lot sow the seeds of doubt about every little choice then panic over whether to call the dealer and change everything.

I'm totally messed up.

The configurator gives a really poor representation of how the colours look in reality. Apart from the obvious shades (red, white, black), you really need to see them in the metal.

The shades of grey available on the Golf are pretty dire IMO, with the possible exception of carbon grey. If they did a grey that I see on a lot of new Audis, I would have been tempted.

Pewter grey on my first Scirocco was a great shade - had that slight purple tinge to it in the right light, seen some Audis with similar shades of grey. Metallics and especially the pearlescents (with the exception of DBP which always looks black) can look very different in different daylight conditions. Definitely need a look - even a sample card won't give you that good an idea of how good or bad a colour will look on a car. I strongly dislike the trendy 70s shades that are out there right now - those grey/browns and pastel colours.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

There was a shade called 'United Grey' they offered in the States (and Germany obviously) for the Mark 6 GTI which I quite like.

That's the same as Steel grey. It was called united grey here in Ireland too for the mk5 and 6.
