MK3 GTI
« on: 13 October 2003, 13:05 »
New to the forums.

Anybody have any pic's of 8v and 16v engines? I'm thinking of buying Mk3 GTI but unsure if its a 16v. Currently have Mk2 16v.

if it has the inlet manifold branches running over the top of the engine it's a 16v

Ie- it'll look just like your mk2!!!!!!!!!

(just have 11 more ponies which you won't be able to see - and a taller block)

Thanks Slim

Guessed it would be similar to the mk2. Still don't know if i'm making the right decision in going for the mk3, thing is it could be a bargain. I do sooooooo luv my mk2

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mk2 was the last golf to have 'feel' (ie handling)

If you really must have a modern car/boat or your mk2 is about to die then get it.

Otherwise I would advise against it

But eventually it's down to you

Just have to wait & see if i get the opp to buy it in the first place and then i'll worry about it when the time comes. What a horrible decision its gonna be!!

i always found that bit on top the engine that says 16v a big help ;)

Used to have a '97 MK3 16v GTI 3dr in 'Black Magic'... now have a '55 Civic Type-S...

The mk3 does feel nearly as good as the mk2 , if you put a decent suspension kit on it  :D

You'll know when you lift the bonnet if it's an 8 valver 'cause it looks like somethings missing. I have an 89 mk2 16v an a 98 mk3 8v. Love them both in different ways. Love the top end kick of the mk2, but love the low end grunt of the mk3 and although I may be alone here, find the mk3 better handling. Just seems more stable throwing it into a (mild) bend at 90 mph than the mk2.

ive driven two mk3 8v one with full uprated suspension which i own at the mo and one that had standard stock and all i can say is upgrade your suspension as it has the feel of a matress on wheels...

My 8v handles really well with the upgraded suspension... although it can be a little hard over bumps it feels alot safer!!!

By the way i wish i waited for a mk3 16v to come along when i was hunting for my mototr as the 8v has a very little bark for wearing that gti badge!!!!

just is the just so many 8v in the world compared to the 16v  :'(
