Sounds like the rod has pushed through the pressure plate,

Gearbox off to sort.

Pedal and cable are still attached to one another.

you say the cable has snapped?

are you sure it is not just the metal clip that holds the cable in place that has rusted off?

No cable hast snapped and is still connected at both ends. Pedal is still functional as is acting upon the cable i can get the pedal back into position by pulling the cable at the gearbox end. The arm out the box has bo pressie on it. It should be hard work to pull it by hand but it isn't.

Might be the clutch release arm has snapped, can be accessed by removing the small green cover on the end of the gear box.

it will 100% be the release arm ratchet... they crack and let the pedal drop

luckily they only cost about £15 (but you also need the green cap which is about £5), as wayne said remove the cap and you can just about get to the clip on the clutch arm to remove it. check the ratchet that goes round this and I gaurantee it will be cracked somewhere

you may need to jack the engine on the driver side to get a little bit more room
