« on: 17 April 2013, 23:41 »
hi all, what is on average the kind of milages that these ABF engines tend to let go on? i know it depends on servicibg, how its driven etc but im just after a general sort of thing here. also ive read if you put the 1.8 kr cams in, it makes it a little more livley. how true is this? thanks!
i think i love you.....

I've seen some still going at over 200,000 but I've seen couple with worn out shells at 120,000.

Go by the servicing.

Kr cams is not true!

Some of the aftermarket cams are designed for KR or ABF and in reality, aren't much more aggressive than standard ABF cams...so an utter waste of money.

Good point Len,

I would personally say 148,000 on your car is normal / average.

~90,000 miles and lower = low miles

high miles is ~180,000 & upwards.

I have tried all the VW cam swaps going in 8v and 16v versions, KR 9A PB ABF, nothing has worked as well as £600 spent with Mr Schrick on a pair of cams and vernier pulley.

My current 8v has 187k on the clock and the two valvers down't yard have 140k and 220k respectivley.

In order of hottest to mildest =  ABF,  KR,  9A

Obviously aftermarket items are available with more duration & lift,
but this was to originally answer that Dan had read KR cams were an upgrade over ABF, which is false.
