Right so the story continues...
2003 vw golf gti
1.8t
AUQ 180
97,000 miles
*On first cold start up in the morning the car puffs out a cloud of blue smoke then clears.
*When the car gets upto temperature (90*) and you either get stuck in traffic or let the car idle for say 5 minutes. when you go to rev the car or pull away a cloud of blue smoke poors out. almost like what ever smoke has built in the exhaust system gets pushed through with new gas to then clear the system. then its clear again untill you let it idle.
Ive just borrowed a friends compression tester, whether I did the compression test right or not I dont know but the results were
roughly. the car was upto temperature when carried out 90*.
cylinder 1 130psi
cylinder 2 130psi
cylinder 3 105psi
cylinder 4 130psi
How ever thess picture may be of interest
exhaust port number 4 which has a
oily tar build up and all the rest (including cylinder number 3 with a lower compression result) have a dry carbon/soot build up.
Exhaust port number 4 oily/tar/wet

exhaust port numbers 1 , 2 & 3 are all dry/carbon/soot

* I have replaced the turbo with a recon unit so can completely rule that option out.
What are peoples thoughts, STEM SEALS? PISTON OIL RINGS? PISTON COMPRESSION RINGS?
with the symptoms ive got and a bit of googling the majority of answer makes me believe stem seals!?
My friend and I are fairly handy with the tools so my questions are
*What is the bare minimum you have to take off to gain access to the valves?
Ideally I want to leave the head on and do the valves in situ with piston at TDC,
*has anyone got a link to a valve spring compressor that will work on the 1.8t 20v with the head in situ?
All thoughts and advice welcome as I really want to get this resolved

thanks
