I'd agree, my limit was £30k, anything more just didn't seem right, even £30k is a lot of money.
One of the reasons I didn't go for anything like the Audi S3 / Golf R as once you add options they would end up to a mouth watering £40k approx.

Just been into my local dealer for a test drive and the best discount they offered me off was £500. Showed them quotes I had got of the internet, but they said that was the best they could do and the £500 was only because I had bought 2 from them before.

What are the current normal discounts people are getting from dealers?

Hi James,

It appears as though the large discounts from the dealers have dried up recently to be honest mate. Before launch you were getting discounts of between 8% - 12% which was probably just to test the waters for demand. I think that the demand levels are at a premium just now that the dealers are no longer offering anythinth near these original discounts.

Your best bet is probably to go through a broker where you will still achieve 10% plus. Another thing to mention is that the higher the spec on your car the more discount you are likely to be offered

James , a couple of weeks ago I went to my local  dealer armed with carwow quotes and managed to get 10% out of them in the end. Originally they were only offering free gap insurance and autoglym. I also told them I was test driving Audi, BMW etc. Good luck.
On order: 5 dr, Manual, Carbon Grey GTD : Winter Pack : Dynaudio : Pro Nav : Rearview Camera

I didn’t see any brokers discounting until mid-april, by which time I’d had my order in over 2 weeks. I didn’t do too badly despite that, considering my p/x value and freebies. Best try a few different dealership groups and play them off each other. Discount depends on their desperation to get your business. If their order book is full and they can’t get another that will be delivered within 6 months they will rebuff your attempts at meaningful discount. They want your business, but how much do they want it?

Right now brokers may be the only way to go – just be wary about part-ex if you have a car to get rid of. If you get £2k discount, but they undervalue your part-ex by £2k vs your local dealer then you’ve gained nowt. Best position to be in is no part-ex and go straight to the brokers.

I’ve seen some locality variables too when everyone was divulging their deals. We in the North East seemed to get the best p/x prices but worst deals if we were buying locally – most of the best deals were happening in the South East, with far better deals to be had on cars laden with options than vanilla spec. It seemed not so much that the car itself was getting a discount, but the options were coming free. The overall car cost on a deal rarely seemed to be under the vanilla car’s RRP.

When you negotiate, get a rock solid part-ex value first and then talk discount, so they don’t undervalue your car to pay for the discount.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Back in April when I dropped my car into a service I decided to get a quote to change from my Mk6 GTD to the new GTI and at the time I decided to leave it. After some more research & thinking I went back 3 weeks ago ready to put a deposit down if they were willing to do a deal.

In the end I managed to get £1500 off the spec I wanted and for some reason was offered £2000 more for my PX than I did 6 months ago which was a surprise  I was told the market place had changed for second hand Mk6 GTD's and prices went up. Not sure if that's true or not but I didn't complain. I also managed  to get them to guarantee my residual value until March.  The only difference was I used a different salesman from the same dealer.
