I thought I would add my discount news in for anyone about to order or thinking of it.
I originally ordered a GTI 5Dr DSG Tornado Red on the day orders opened and mentioned a discount to the dealer who said "no chance" as I expected. Oh well, that was what I planned on.
2 days later we had some concerning news at work (bank being difficult etc) and I decided that discretion would be the better part of valour and I asked the dealer to cancel the order even though I had paid £1000 deposit and signed an order which said no refunds on deposits. They repaid the deposit no problem, so I was quite happy.
We have now sorted out the bank at work and so I decided to reorder, but in Carbon Steel Grey this time. I phoned the dealer to make an appointment and warned him I would be looking for a decent discount since Broadspeed and Drive The Deal brokers are offering 9% and 12% respectively. When I went in to place the new order, I showed him a table I had done of the broker prices and the discounts available and he went off to see his manager. Came back 5 minutes later and said they would match the Broadspeed discount of 9% but could not match Drive The Deal 12%. They didn't ask for proof of the discoount from the brokers or try to convince me that using the dealer is far better service etc etc
I almost bit his hand off. Got the 9% on standard car but not on the options (probably could have pushed for it on the options but didn't as I was happy enough with £2500 off list).
The provisional order slot they had given me when I ordered first had not gone to anyone else so I had the same order slot, but they have quoted week 40 for ? build ? delivery ? since I changed the colour. Probably also down to popularity of DSG ? Anyhow, I can wait until October for that level of discount.
The moral of the story: don't be afraid to ask for the discount and use the broker prices and discounts as a lever. It was easy to achieve and no hard sell on finance, paint cover, gap insurance or anything else.
