GTI Dealer Discounts?
« on: 14 April 2013, 18:20 »
Hi there,

I have so far manged to only speak to two dealers, one offered nothing (Ridgeway Reading) and one offered 3%.

I plan to buy the car for cash and have no trade in as my 'Roc is going back as on contract hire.
Any recommendations or suggestions appreciated as to the most likely and that offered to anyone already.

Thanks
Ordered a Golf GTI DSG Performance Pack in Pure White with Keyless Entry, Dynaudio, Rear View Camera and Panoramic Roof.

Currently driving a Scirocco 170 GT in Night Blue with Bluetooth, Rear Parking Sensors, DAB and Dynaudio.

Broadspeed all the way. 9% discount can not be beaten by ANY dealer for the foreseeable. Might have to wait a bit longer for delivery, say 14 weeks, due to dealer allocation, but its gotta be worth it!

After not finding the right model on the first site suggested broad speed is much cheaper!  Thanks for the suggestion, makes those dealers offering 0 discount seem as arrogant as ever

Does the broadspeed price include the £199 fee they charge the buyer (not sure whether the "price" is inclusinve of that fee or not. With no part ex then broker is the way to go. Also try the others, there are a fair few out there including "uknewcars".

Tell you a funny story. I got £1150 off my 5 door DSG GTI, performance pack, leather, basic Nav, metallic paint, rear view camera.

But I could have got £1500 for sure off another dealer and I reckon I could have got free servicing thrown in on top. What happened was that I had already done the deal and then a few days later I was driving past another vw dealer with a friend and wanted to show him the mark 7 golf, so just for the heck of it I asked the dealer for a 3k discount of the GTI. He to and fro'd to his manager and eventually they agreed on £1500 off. But I didn't push them after that. I reckon I could've got another £300-£400 for sure.

Dealers are basically 'bullsh!tters' to put it simply. I called an Audi dealer asking what deals they would do on the new S3, he was like "Nothing, you just won't get a discount on a car we'll easily sell" He then went on to say "I worked at VW until recently (the exact dealer I've ordered my car with btw) and I never gave a discount on a GTI in the 9 and a half years i worked there". What utter crap! I said I just got about £1200 off without even much negotiating. He was like "Wow I can't believe it" They just talk crap.

Do not settle for anything less than £1000 for sure. And push for £1500 at least. Best thing to do is simply spec your car and work out 5-6% off it and then say I've got this much. It's nice if the car is say £31,800 and you just say I only have an even 30k mate. And say, just tell me cos I need to go to the next dealer otherwise.

Good luck!

The total list price of my 5 door GTi (DSG) came to £31k including options. The dealer was initially prepared to come down to £29,700 but after a little more haggling we settled on £29k (that is with finance @ 6.4% APR though). I was also lucky to blag an extra £2.5k on top of my part-exchange which was a real bonus. So there are deals to be had.

I don't know if this had anything to do with the fact that it was the end of the month & end of their quarter when I placed my order?

Master/Gung-ho: You's 2 must have some desperate dealerships near you to be getting those kind of discounts on a car so new that it isn't even out yet. Great news on the discounts you have received. Both of you have added a few costly options - I do think there is more margin in those options than in the car itself, maybe partially why the level of discount is so good? I've never been one for loading up on the options which maybe why I get less of a discount (believe me, I haggle hard and try to play the local dealership groups off each other). It seems that in the Tyne/Wear area the new GTI and GTD are already much sought after which probably reduces the chance of discount somewhat whilst allocations remain tight. My supplying dealer has already had orders in for 4 GTDs and 3 GTIs (I know all of the people who have ordered GTDs and they got similar levels of discount/part ex allowance to me, at best).

If a VW dealership only has 1 of each per month allocated and they know that someone will walk in within the month and pay close to list price then they'd be daft to let it go at a discount.

There seems to be almost a reverse of the North/South divide when it comes to cars. There are far more new cars up around Tyne and Wear than there are down south (maybe not counting London and the home counties). This is mainly due to the cheaper cost of living and not having cripplingly huge mortgages. If you're in a reasonably paid job in the North East you've got far more disposable income. I have mates down in Southampton who earn more than me but drive around in bangers because of the size of their mortgage etc. As a result our dealerships are hives of activity most weekends. It's not unusual to have to wait an hour to speak to a salesman at the VW/Audi/BMW dealerships Saturday/Sunday. Our local dealerships are always doing well so there's less scope for desperation levels of discount.

Whatever your circumstances it's always better to ask for a discount and maybe get knocked back a little than not ask at all - "shy bairns get nowt".

I suppose all this means that maybe someone like me (in my location) has to look further afield for a deal. Having a part-ex is a hindrance to getting the absolute best deal and whatever you get, someone will always better it.

There are discounts to be had.  My order totalled £29,328 and I got them down to £28,188 (£1,140 discount).  Now I know that I was the first to order from this particular dealer so that my have been a factor, but I still think you should be looking to get at least a grand off an order.  Remember, you are doing THEM a favour - unless they have a queue outside the door for people ordering, they will be champing at the bit to gain a sale.  To be honest, I probably could have got a bit more however the monthly payments got to where I wanted them to be so I was happy with the amount I got off.
