sorry to hear about ure car , I have a house  alarm which gets put on at night and we can walk about the house ok and if the doors front/back get opened it goes off .
I leave my keys in the door lock and if the feckers are clever enough to get my keys from the lock without setting the alarm off they can have the car its a GTD though so maybe not quite as sought after , I would have liked a gti but as we do a bit of mileage the GTD was the best option .
Don't let them put you off having another 1 .

They would take absolutely anything if they could, not just a GTi. The copper who attended our 'break in' said that he has also attended properties which had a (to include) Honda Jazz and Suzuki Swift stolen. You'd expect that these may have been opportunist but no, they broke in at night to steal the keys for these cars too.
(i) If you have a house alarm than they only have time to rumage downstairs before the alarm goes off fully. They probably wouldn't have time to go upstairs and confront the householders.
(ii) Also, many banged-up/reformed burglars have admitted to avoiding residential properties with CCTV; (a) for the obvious reason) and (b) they do not know if the property has internal (possibly pinhole) cameras and/or security bugs inside the house.
(iii) They also think that if one property has CCTV, then others in the area will do too. Thus, meaning other CCTV systems may catch images of their transportation prior to arriving to their targetted property etc, or any other footage prior or after the crime

Hope this helps

How are things going on the insurance front EliteBajan?

Just heard from my mate (who now lives in Boston US) - his house was broken into yesterday - car keys nicked and his Audi TT stolen from driveway

Sorry to here about this Elite, must be a very stressful time at the moment.

I had a very close call about a year ago.

I was away on business and on my way home when the misses rang to say when she got from from work we had been burgled. She was in floods of tears but good thing I was on my way home that night.

I had left my GTI on the driveway, I had the keys with me but had a spare set in the house.

At some point in the day they got in via breaking into our shed and using some garden tools to open the conservatory up and then internal patio doors which were not strong enough by todays standards. They turned the house over looking for the spare set but the cu**s did find them, as I hid them well. But they did get a BMW from a street nearby. Police didn't do much apart from dust for prints.

I had GAP so was fully covered but it was a bit of a trauma to say the least and felt sick. We are ok about it now but was a real shock. I am glad I dont have to contend with the hassle of dealing with the insurance claim tw*ts and the impact on my premiums!

Now I pay £30 cpm for secure storage (no garage) for when I am not at home, it costs but its piece of mind for me and the misses. I always put the diskloc on and always park her car behind mine, so I am pretty OCD about it now.

In the future will look into alarm system and cctv and buy a house with a garage!

hope it all gets sorted out for you mate.

I feel like designing a fake VW key that electrocutes you with the power of a taser if you pick it up.  Then I'll leave that downstairs and keep the real keys upstairs.  Those thieving b******s deserve a nice shock.  Hopefully that would incapacitate them while I call the coppers.

Of course the courts would probably let them off with a "you were very naughty, please don't do it again, and would you like to sue the fellow who's house you broke into?"

Makes me feel like

Not so good!!

VW Insurance aka Allianz, have said that they are not willing to replace the car with a Mk7 as that is a new model. I have said I'm not willing to accept anything less than a new car!

Allianz are yet to put anything in writing, but I have already contacted the ombudsman who have written to them to say I have a complaint. I'm expecting a phone call tomorrow from Allianz to tell me exactly what they intend to do next at which point ill say I want it in writing. If its still no joy then I'll leave it in the hands of the ombudsman and see what they come up with.

It's been 5 weeks now and Allianz have been really poor. I've had to constantly chase them to find out what's going on, they have written to me once in that time and even then forgot to include a claim form. It took two weeks for them to get the report back from the loss adjuster.

So all in all I'm cheesed off but can only wait and see how things develop.

Really sorry to hear things not going well.  Hopefully you'll get some joy from ombudsman, at the very least it sounds like Allianz administration of your claim has been poor

Don't know if you've seen this thread but there's a bit of info from ombudsman in it, though the circumstances of the car loss were different, it may be relevant.

Thanks for the thread, it made interesting reading. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be that lucky as my insurance company don't have anybody else to rape and pillage!!
