bottom heat shield on cat rattling-solved-removed
« on: 29 March 2013, 23:48 »
the lower heat shield on the cat is rattling. the front of it has seperated and is hanging down slightly. this may be dangerous if it catches and the force sends it into the cat??

i was wondering if i can just use a coathanger to tie it to the exhaust. i know the cats get quite hot and it might just come apart.would it pass the mot without the heat shield and if removed would the cat heat up enough to pass emissions testing/ function properly?

i will not be welding anything on this car if i can help it until after mot(if it passes) in july.

Its not heavy enough to damage the cat and i shouldn't think its an mot failure unless the whole thing is detached, i use very small nyloc nuts to secure the heat shields back up on mine as it seems to work and its a bit tidyer than bits of old wire.
