Good question.I have read that if they are warm they are working ok but believe me that aint always so.When they get warm the contacts inside can seperate causing allsorts of issues including cutting out,bad idling,etc.I would just change them for peace of mind and they are a cheap enough fix.

Dan,one more thing you can check is the temperature sensor especially if your having problems starting on cold mornings.http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=101400.msg862334#msg862334
