stalling/hesitation and fuel relay clicking
« on: 20 March 2013, 17:55 »
Hi guys im new here , i bought a mk3 2l 8v gti a month or so ago didnt have Mot on it so havent test driven far . i went for mot today and on the way back the engine started stalling/hesitation at about 2500 rpm .

Sooo , After checking ht leads and dizzy , which look new by the way and so does the crank sensor , i started it up running lumpy and was wigglng relays .

I pushed the accelerator while feeling and wiggling and discovered the 167 relay which i believe is the fuel pump relay was clicking exessivly . could this be my problem ??? ..

or could it only be doing it when warm ? 90deg on temp gauge .

help would be gratefull as i need to get two tyres on the car and retested asap thanks

I've never had an issue with the relays, so I'm not sure. But if it is clicking then I'm sure it's working.

One way to check if relays are working. Start car from cold, touch relays after 10-15 mins of driving or ideling, if they are warm then they are functioning properly, if they are cold, you got a naffd relay

check the fuel pump relay and ecu relay, both common to go and will keep cutting out engine.

Also another thing to note, when your car cuts out, does the oil light flash?

I did feel both relays for heat and felt a slight difference between them and the other relays , but the excessive clicking of the relay opening and closing when opening throttle was drawing my attention to it being naffed .

The car only cut out / stopped running when i unplugged temp switch . But as the revs dropped at some points when attempting to drive the oil pressure light come on .

FAILED TO MENTION . This seems to be intermittent i can drive the car for about 10 mins and then this happens , turn engine off for a few mins and its fine again for a couple of mins .

The car will sits there on idle fine for ages ,fan cuts in and out . But it doesnt stay on for long maybe 30seconds a time ? Is this normal ??

What reg is your car?, and what engine code is it.

The other thing that could cause the cutting out could be dirty throttle body.

Also have you had it on vagcom?

If the fans are cutting in, they working fine. And yes it is normal for fans to come on 30 seconds a time. It sounds about right.

I believe the engine code to be AGG. The car is a P reg so 97/98

Another thing to mention is that after the car cut out that first and only time its took some turning over to start .

I took the inlet boot off , there was mild oil residue but the throttle body itslef looked relativly clean .

I dont have any access to vagcom unfortunatly .

Thanks about the fan thats one thing off my mind .

Im reading all sorts of other peoples similar problems and i feel it maybe the fuel ounp relay or coil ???

Change that relay as it only ment to click when the car is runnin. Not ment to keep clicking.

As sharki786 has said. Try this first.
