Cambelt replacement..
« on: 18 March 2013, 17:52 »
Been getting a few quotes for Cambelt replacement on the GTi, spoke with Heritage VW at Dorchester..just to get a price to compare too...£479 inc waterpump. Was almost tempted until I shopped about, local garage wanted 290 for just belt and tensioners replacement...best price so far...until i spoke with the local VW specialists in Weymouth, as recommended by a member on here, Oceanic-Green, and got the price down to £251 inc waterpump...I'm thinking this is a good price..i doubt I'll,get it any cheaper...will I?

I'd be making sure I fit a genuine kit tbh, the cambelt isn't something I'd skimp on

Yeh, and me! This GTi has no service history from 2002, so I know nothing about it! So from now, i will start building a history file for it. My mk5 has FVWSH I'm the second owner, so know it well :-)

VW specialist it is then

Don't mean to be picky, But what is a genuine cambelt kit?
VW don't make any of the parts, iirc the belts are made by Gates or Dayco and the tensioner some one else.
There is nothing wrong with using a Gates kit or a Continental Contitech Kit both at a fraction of the dealer prices.

The only thing I would buy from the dealer is the waterpump.

This is the kit I have used................

Includes EVERYTHING needed except the pump.
£109 delivered
