DSG Drivers
« on: 12 March 2013, 10:26 »
I asked a similar question way back when i first started on this forum but don't think i got a clear answer hense the new thread, i live on quite a busy road and sometimes when reversing off my drive it has to be a bit sharpish which is fine in my manual car but i'm going for a DSG box in the next car, when reversing with a DSG gearbox do you have to come to a complete stop before engaging drive? Not a big issue but would be nice to know before i destroy it in the first week!!

Cheers chaps.

You can engage reverse whilst the car is still moving forward and vice versa but it is a little slow. Actually moving the lever from 'D' to 'R' takes as long as it does in a manual but the mechanism isn't any where near as quick. Probably somewhere in the region of a 2-3 second pause, or at least it feels that long

EDIT: Sorry just realised i'm in MK6 forum  . My cars a MK5 but i don't think DSG changed much between the two?

 it would actually solve the problem! I'm a bit wierd in that i hate having my car facing the road, it could be an OCD!!! :embarrassed:

It's never really been an issue and will most likely be fine but was just curious about how the gearbox functions.

According to the handbook do have to come to a complete stop. I've not tried it whilst still moving, so don't really know for sure. I just make other traffic wait. If your cars "body language" suggests what you are doing, you'll generally be given time.

I assume you are asking about Mk7's so this next bit will be relevant. What is a bit of a pain is Auto Hold. As soon as you come to a stop, the parking brake comes on. You can't just ease off the brake to roll forwards or backwards a small amount if gravity will allow. You need to press the accelerator to release the Auto Hold, which can result in a lurch forward or backwards. You can switch Auto Hold off, but I didn't know this the first day I had my car, and I was trying to edge out of a downhill junction.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

This.

I live on a busy rural road and though I can turn the car around on the driveway, if other cars are parked on it, I usually reverse on.  On the occasions I do reverse out into the main road, I find DSG okay, though I've never moved into reverse without stopping first.  You just need to judge the approaching traffic carefully and have quick reflexes

Dubber36 makes a good point about the Auto Hold feature of the mk7 but having experienced this on a works rental vehicle, I'd be inclined to swtich it off.

Not been funny but if its a main road its actually against the law to reverse onto it, your suppose to reverse onto your drive from a main road. If you cause an accident I dont know where you would stand.
In the mk5 I found dsg very slow to react to such change intact it felt like an old auto box does in that regard.
Why not ask your dealer if you can borrow a dsg car for a day to try and see if  if your happy with it, after all your spending a lot of money on a mk7

It's not really a main road tbh, it just gets quite busy from time to time, like i said earlier coming to a stop is not an issue at all it's just different to what i do now in my manual, it was more a question of functionality of the box itself rather than the situation. I have driven a DSG a couple of times now and i'm really impressed with it so WILL be having one, just have to get used to it i suppose.

Thanks.

Jim

I'm looking at DSG in my next car and I hadn't thought about the delay in the box changing gear.

Is the DSG box in the Mk7 exactly the same as the Mk6 one or is it being upgraded do we know?

Just wondering whether a test drive is required? [for me!]
