Hunting, spluttering, cutting out :/
« on: 09 March 2013, 09:10 »
My mk2 golf 1990 8v digi was running fine, then suddenly started hunting ie its reving on its own from 900 -1500 rpm. It then started to cut out at junctions but restart immediately, now it sounds like it's misfiring,
I've done the timing as per RJs guide, changed the blue temp for a genuine vw one, new ht leads, getting fuel and good spark.
I'm thinking it's electrical I've cleaned all the earth's, and double checked the vac lines, all the wiring seems fine I've disconnected all wiring and cleaned the connecting terminals
Really stressed and frustrated with it now
Any help would be ideal
Thank you

Have you checked the seal on the oil breather? That can cause rough running

Did you reset the ECU after fitting the blue temp sender??

Have you tried new plugs as well as the HT's?

Dizzy is the next thing if the fuel pump is not the problem.

Wiggle the plug on the dizzy and see if that helps. The contacts can break around that area.

Fixed thanks guys, it was the cam breather lol, just need to adjust the idle now as it's not idling, but it's much smoother and sounds healthy :) does anybody know if there is a default amount of turns? As I removed the screw and cleaned it.
Thanks again
Ian

check the throttle butterfly and its housing are clean. this can cause hunting and idle issues... and its a quick check!

Thanks, I cleaned them with a bit of carb cleaner, but it's free I will clean them again lol, I'm sure it's just an adjust issue. I'll report back ;)
