Hi Guys

was hoping someone could shed some light on the differences between the normal and long life servicing on the Mk6 Golf 2.0 TDI (GT 140BHP)

As I understand

Normal service = 10,000 miles or 1 year what ever comes sooner
Long life = 20,000 miles or 1 year whatever comes sooner

Is a different engine oil/filter used to achieve this? or is it just an adjustment on the OBC?

My car is currently set on normal service but a change of circumstances means that I will have done just under 20,000 miles within 12 months of the last service, I would expect that the service light would flash up after 6 months.  Would there be any harm ignoring it and servicing it when it has been 12 months since the last service? (car would have covered 18,000 - 19,000 miles at this point?)

If the light comes on I personally wudnt ignore it for to long as its on for reason and potentially ignoring it for to long will surely do more harm than good...I think there is a time limit in which you have to have had the service done from when the light appears...I'm sure someone can elaborate on this..?

These are my concerns also, i think i need to try and find out if there are actually any differences between a normal service and a long-life service?

Further to the above, my understanding is that the oil for long life is different to the fixed 10k one.

I thought the opposite, I remember reading ages ago that it's the same oil that is used.

If you're on the time and distance servicing regime, then as you've said, the service interval is 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever occurs first. If your car's under warranty, I wouldn't risk running up to 18,000 - 19,000 in 12 months under 'time and distance' before you get your car serviced; if you need any work done under warranty, you're just giving VW a reason to not carry out warranty repairs and / or void your warranty on the basis that the vehicle hasn't been serviced in accordance with VW's requirements, so technically you'd be in breach of the warranty conditions - see the copy of the warranty servicing requirements below from VW's website.

You can have the service regime changed to long life from time and distance, when you get it serviced.

Car is 2009 so is out of warranty so nothing to worry about on that front.

From reading in to this it just seems that I may be paying for a service when it may not necesserilly be required.  If the same oil and filters is used irrespective of wether it is a 'fixed' service or 'long life' what difference does a a flashing notification on start up actually make apart from being a little annoying?  I mean it does not appear to change anything in the engine irrespective of the setting so what difference does it actually make?

When I do service it which will proberbly be at a reputable indy if it is showing as say 18,000 miles since last service then the service histroy would just appear to look as if the car was set to 'long life'

You might be right Jim but when I asked at my VW Dealer what the difference was, he said the oil they use for the long life is a higher spec to take into account the longer time period/mileage?

It might have been bull?

Dont know if this differs depending on dealers but I have spoke with service desk at Nottingham Volkswagen who have confirmed they use the same oil irrespective of service types
