Its going to be an 02A or an 02J gearbox, the code you need is located on the top of the gearbox near the shifter tower, If you are looking down on top of the gearbox from the front of the car, it is about an inch to the left from the shifter tower, will be 3 letters and a few numbers, just the 3 letters you need really. If its a mk3 02A box they have used, it will be a single mass flywheel and the Sacks or LUK VR6 clutch will be the one to buy.
However, if they have used the TT box, it could be an 02J with dual mass flywheel and you will ned to buy the clutch to suit

Thank you mate

Just been outside and with some rag I managed to reveal the code.......

DPA 28 086

Then on the other part is this......  357 721 261

Cant see any 02A or anything like that?

In the service book it says.....Gearbox code, Paint number, Interior Equipment, Engine output/code which are as follows as I don't know what mean what or though I know the paint code from this lot......

CCM LC9Z-------XH  128KW AAA  (The LC9Z is paint and I am 99% sure the AAA is a VR6 engine code)  Thus leaving the CCM which must be the gearbox code?  This is from the original VR6 engine though, so they may have changed the gearbox but no receipts for it, just receipts for an Audi TT engine.

DPA is a mk3 valver box matey so go get yourself a Sachs or LUK VR6 clutch kit, the VR clutches are a direct fit to these boxes and are stronger than the valver ones...... incase you were wondering why you would buy a VR6 clutch for a 2.0 16v gearbox on a 1.8T engine lol

Big thanks benvictors.....You really know your stuff   Wow, so a bit of mix-match with engine, gearbox and car, lol!  A Valver clutch must be pants for a mapped/modified 1.8 20vt engine......Will get a VR clutch kit, should keep things in order

The lad who sold it is on here, nice guy. He only has a few posts and that was just to sell his car.

Indeed it is a shame but as long as nothing is dangerous on the car that could put my daughters at risk then all good!  She is now a project for me and I will bring her to her former glory!  Got so much planned, keeping me busy as got no work for 11 days till our new contract starts which is taking down a load of old houses up north, so until then she is getting a lot done!

Jobs done already......

Carpet out, floor rubbed down due to rust, plated, hammerite. Full service using OE parts and NGK plugs suggested by Brad. Complete dash out, all parts cleaned and all bulbs etc replaced. Imob' re-wired due to very bad wiring. Door cards off and greased window runners and Hammerite coated inside the doors for that extra protection against any rust, re-connected some broken wires in door via soldering and heat wrap, carpet fully steam cleaned, full cloth interior from Big Gun in mint condition with no bolster wear, (no bolster wear and Big Gun is 6ft 7 and 22st!)  Also the legend 'Shady Pioneer' has helped with a few bits and bobs so she is getting there!

Just go carparts4less or Eurocarparts.

Euro stuff is fine as long as it's branded, I use them for my jobs. Full cambelt kits are about £20-£30 for DECENT Contitech etc ones.

Agree with all that Ben says all except needing two people for the gearbox. I usually work alone and do loads of gearbox/clutch jobs by myself. I am pretty used to it though.

You might find as I have done in the past that while you've undone one sides mounts (i.e gearbox) it's easy to just remove all of them providing there's enough slack.

Where all my moneys went.
