failed MOT

after some help please

car failed mot friday with high emissions after looking at it today i noticed the previous owner has un-pluuged the lamba sensor would this cause very high emissions?

Garage said the CO and Lamba reading was well over would the sensor un plugged corse this or has my cat gone?
any help or advice appreciated

reason for it being unplugged... my guess it threw a fuse (the one for the fuel pump) which will logically make the engine stop....

with lambda disconnected it would use a default value.... which is chosen to be slightly rich mixture (less damaging than too lean).... probably checked how much a new one of them was and decided to f**k it (or the old one is stuck he couldnt be bothered to get it out.... hate when people do this....
bet it's not the only issue with it...

I would try to replace lambda sensor, go for a decent quality one... then hook it up to vcds and check it works again (check the vagcom/vcds user list in the garage section). then test in garage if cat was damaged.

I put my cat in a vice then undo the sensor. They are tight and hard to do with it fitted to the car or on the floor.

And your problem is the unplugged sensor

Try undoing it first. Undone one on an 8v and one on my 1.6 both with a spanner on the vehicle. Both undid surprisingly easily...

Took cat off today to get old sensor out and somebody has removed its insides   :sad:

so new cat and sensor ordered today

hope this sorts it  :smiley:

now to fix all the other fails lol

Another trick for undoing Lamba probes is to try with the exhaust warm (but be carefull)

You need good quality spanners to undo the Lambda.
Never had a problem myself.

There's an actual tool for the job itself, Its like a socket that's got a cut out on the side for the lambda wires to go through and all you do is turn it with a ratchet. Very Easy  :cool:
