No heat still looking for new ideas

Hi all, well changed the thermostat, hoping it was something simple but it seems not. Update on what i have done so far. Flushed water and air lines through the two pipes on the bulk head going to the matrix. Water seems to flow both ways. Thermostat changed and water flushed through from the overflow bottle. Suspected blockage in rad so flushed that through more filthy brown water came out.
Symtoms, little to no heat in the car, bottom hose of the rad cold even at full temp. Top hose red hot. One of the hoses going to the matrix is red hot left one i think the other is hot but not as hot.
Put the hose through the rad and it seemed to flow quite fast, so i disconnected the bottom hose of the thermostat and ran the car up while topping up the water. It seemed quite slow coming out the bottom pipe. My thoughts are water pump not working very well? Water is flowing though but as i am not a mechanic i don't know how fast it should flow.
Stuck for ideas now anyone got any more comments to add, also where is the water pump located?
BTW is a mk4 golf gti 2.0

Sounds like a knackered water pump, Here's a decent tutorial on how to change it, it is gonna be a cam belt off job though! http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2271429-DIY-Timing-Belt-And-Coolant-Pump-Replacement-on-2.0-AEG!-Pics-Inside!

Mine did this and it was the water pump the plastic impeller broke up.

So 3 for 3 looks like water pump. not a job i fancy doing. might get all the bits i need a pass it on. glad i did not use my new coolant yet.

what was your last cambelt change? if its due soon be worth doing the lot.

No idea so would have it done anyway at the same time. No had the car all that long, suppose i should have a peek at the service book to make it was not done last year.

yup, just to add to it, Water pump sounds about right. Do you find the warning light comes on if you drive over like..45?

Also, if you find it's not that either then maybe check your airbox. My Corrado had this problem and after changing everything we found it was just the cable from the heater controls that's supposed to close the flap the cold air comes in through, so the cold air was basically masking the hot air to the point it was virtually undetectable. Fix was a slight adjustment of the cable and all was well - that's assuming there's a similar set up on Mk4 airboxes that is... Cause I don't know :p

No air box on this one it has a k&n type filter, i guess you meant inside the box where the filter would be? No warning lights come on and no overheating temp stays bob on the middle.

changed my stat today in my 1.8t temp gauge now works sits at 90 and don't move but took the wife out early to Tesco sat with the car running for 15mins while she went in temp went to 90 all well and good on the way back give it the beans to get the water flowing got home took a look no leaks water levels bang on. but top hose red hot bottom hose cold is this correct???

I left the car running for a while more and give the bottom hose a squeeze a few times and not long after that the hose became warm I take it the stat had started to open??
