Modern headunit into a Mk I???
« on: 10 October 2003, 15:50 »
Hello all.

Well after fitting my new head unit and CD changer to the Golf, which turned out to be easier than expected, I thought I would then replace the knackered excuse for a radio/tape player in my scirocco with the nice shiny Kenwood CD head unit taken out of the golf. 8)

BUT, horror of horrors - it doesn't appear to be that simple.
 >:(
The unit I want to replace appears to have connections for -

1. wire for right speaker
2. wire for left speaker
3. wire for power
4. wire for earth
5. aerial connector

Should I have more wires to conect than this? :-\

There's no easy plug-it-in and away to go scenario.
I've been told I need to buy a plug that will fit into the Kenwood 'socket'then cut the wires off this plug and fit bullet type connectors to wire it up to the car.
This seems a bit of a waste...Could I just cut the wires that come out of the Kenwood plug and save myself a tenner?

Which brings me back to the question...
What's the best way to fit a modern headunit into a Mk I then??? ???

Cheers,

Ryan

The wires you have on the old unit sound correct, the early golf's and scirocco's only had basic stereos and even then there wasnt any of this ISO plug lark that all the new cars have.

What you've been told is what I would do , either use your existing radio loom or buy one to use and keep the original. Just use bullet connectors as thats what radios used to have before ISO became commonplace.

Take your time and make the loom up and either crimp or solder the connections and you shouldn't have any problems.

When I put a good stereo in an old scirocco MK1 storm I had to run the wires to the shelf in the back as they only had front speakers from the factory.

I'd go with Mod on this - I made up an entire loom for my headunit, and then took both pre-outs to a couple of amps.
If you're confident in doing this, it is the best way. At least you will know how the whole stereo wiring is routed for any future mods you may wish to add in the future.

Protection for door speaker wires...
Okay, here's one for you
Whilst in the process of fitting and re-wiring my modern headunit into my not-so-modern mk1 rocco, I have noticed that the speaker wires to the front door speakers are shot.
So now I'm replacing the whole lot, as they appear to be about 5 lengths of wire from speaker to headunit!

But my problem is - where the wires will be located into the door hole at the front of the door, there is no protection for them; ie no rubber tube type things to stop them getting damaged when I shut the doors. Having looked at the old wiring in this position I have found that it has cut through to the metal of the wires after persistent door slamming abuse!

So firstly are there supposed to be any protecting rubber bits fitted?
And if not, any suggestions where I can get some or bodge some to fit?
Or any other ways to get around this problem?

Cheers,
Ryan

I have a concatinad rubber tube connected between door and body, all my cable for central locking, windows, and speakers go through it. you should be able to pick one up from a scrappy or a car accessory shop may do them. They are needed as you know, the wire will just get caffed away else.

mine is standard fit - so look for a late model cab, or possibly a mk2 ???

id get the adapter to fit your stereo to the rocco loom, and hold on to the stereo that was in the rocco, cause at resale time youll get more for a totally standard and orig car! dont wanna be choppin all those wires unless ya have too!

The Stereo I'm replacing wasn't original anyway...and didn't work! ::)
(could've be down to the speaker wires though)
So at the moment I have a 12 month old CD player - and no sounds in my rocco... :D
Therefore it's definitely going in...and the car is for keeps - wanted one since I was 11.  So I don't plan on there being a resale time.

I've waited this long - now I want to make it 'mine'.
And because I already have the stereo it's the first mod.
(and one of the cheapest  ;) )

While we're on the subject - anyone know what speakers I can fit in the door pockets (to replace the originals) - but still retain a 'standard look'?

One thing to make sure is that the wiring is in good nick. Some of the older cars have been butchered around and the wiring needs sorting out. also the fusboxes are always hassle so take any feeds direct from the battery to make sure.
