could be a number of things, theres been a few topics started in the last few weeks about this. 1st thing would be to search through the last few pages of this forum section. 2nd would be to scan the car for fault codes.

sorry to jump onto this thread but im having the same issue so thought for the price of a temp sensor might aswell do that since ive now done the MAF, Lambda, checked for air leaks, diverter valve and N75 and running out of stuff to do

just to confirm is this the temp sensor i need http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GREEN-Water-Temperature-Sensor-VW-Golf-Mk4-1-6-2-0-GTI-coolant-temp-sender-gauge-/400352006946?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d36d6d322

Have a look at the one you currently have fitted as there are a few different ones. If you've got one fitted with that shaped plug then it'll be fine.

I wouldn't expect one that cheap to last for very long, but it will give you an indication as to whether the temp sensor is at fault.

There is 2 temperature sensors on the mk4 , the one you'll need to change is a 4 pin sensor , mine I changed was green

Just to confirm that is the correct sensor but your best off getting one from a vw specialist dependant where your based i got a genuine one for £17 with the o-ring and also make sure you've for coolant or save you old and re use

cheers for the info i found a guide on how to do it plus one for the thermostat so gonna do both and ive ordered genuine parts. Figured even if it isnt the temp sensor causing it atleast i wont be replacing it in 2 months cause of a cheap part. should last me quite a while now and can rule it out totally. My exhaust did have a leak but it was patched and didnt help the mpg its possible the patch has popped again but would that cause the erratic idle aswell? and the cutting out?
