No throttle :/
« on: 14 February 2013, 21:38 »
Ok so just had a strange experience!  :undecided:
Will be plugging vcds lite tomorrow but just wondered if anyone has had the same problem before.

I started the car and it was fine ticking over while I belted up and plugged my iPhone in flicked the lights on (hid with projectors so take a surge of power to start) and the engine cut out  :undecided: I just thought it may be the alternator and the cold as I have noticed the revs drop a little when I have flicked them on before but it's never cut out.

I started my journey and the throttle was being very strange as when I toched the pedal there was a large hesitation and then I would jolt forwards I thought low batter so drove in a high gear for a min or two but it was still doing it  :undecided:

Went up a bypass and then a mile a long at about 60 mph the throttle cut out all together and the eps light came on and I had no throttle whatsoever, slowed to 30 mph flicked the I horizon off and on and it was back to normal!

I still think it feels strange in a indescribable way but I'm unsure if its just me imagining it due to thinking about it  :undecided:

So has this ever happened to anyone ? Possibly all related the the battery or alternator??
Any idea appropriated will plug the laptop in tomorrow.

Does it start fine or does the starter motor seem a little sluggish? Firstly make sure your battery terminals are tight! Ideally you could do with a volt meter, put it across the battery, a healthy battery should show 12v plus. Then start your engine, voltage should rise to around 14v. If you get no rise, assuming all the connections are fine, it'll be your alternator. I'm pretty sure halfords are still doing free battery health checks to rule out a duff cell in your battery.

I've got a volt meter an you can also read the voltage on vcds so will do both
Seems to start fine and its only done it once but will also check the connections.
I think it may be my alternator but will that also be the cause o the epc screwing up? As when I turned it off and on it was fine  :undecided:

the alternator may just be on its way out and not producing enough charge to run all your accessories. It could even be the belt slipping. You'll probably have a few fault codes saying 'low voltage at pin xxx' If theres something wrong with the charging system.

17743/P1335 - Engine Torque Monitor 2: Control Limit Exceeded
Possible Symptoms

   Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
   Reduced Power
Possible Causes
   Intake hose(s) or intake system leaks (Unmetered Air) after MAF
   Intake Air Temperature sensor faulty
   Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70) faulty
   Engine Coolant Temperature sensor faulty
   Restricted Air or Fuel Filters
Possible Solutions
   Check intake hose(s) or intake system for leaks (Unmetered Air) after MAF
   Check Intake Air Temperature sensor
   Check Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
   Check Engine Coolant Temperature sensor
   Check Air and Fuel Filters

I also got the n249 open circuit code pop up.

Battery ---

11.5v with engine off
When started down to 8.8v for 5 sec then upto 14.3
After idle for a min or two down to between 14 And 13.5
After shutting off battery down to 12.4

Cleared codes before engine starting
N249 came back up after idling

i think the resistor for the n249 may be shot so am going to purchase some new ones.

I should add all the fault codes apart from the n249 were listed as intermittent faults.

do people think its the battery or the alternator? maybe both :undecided:

possibly the interment faults are being caused by the battery/alternator problems...

Well from what you've said I'd say your charging circuit and battery seem healthy, if it was a slipping belt I would have thought you would have had a low voltage code. I'm not sure a n249 fault would cause the car to cut out. Same with the g71 sensor, it wasn't even plugged in when I bought my mk4.  I'm kinda stumped mate!

Well when I'm next off work I'm going to chuck the battery off my track car an do the resistor and see what happens!
