ive had a few friends that have run 230+bhp on a stock smic, ive just bought a turborevs smic an im going to do the tt wheel arch mod plus ive had a new pancake pipe made that doesn't have the flat bit in it. im not a fan of fmic an all ive read is that unless u spend £300 plus on one the pipe work an time fitting one can be a pain in the ass. my local tuning garage has said that they can get 210-230bhp out of mine (aum 52 plate) with just a uprated turbo downpipe, better airflow from either induction kit or uprated panel filter an more free flowing air around the smic,(uprated or stock). one of the most restrictive things on mk4 1.8t golf is the turbo down pipe its got such a small pipe with two horrible bends in it, im running a ebay decat down pipe which ive customized by fitting the original cat into an then a custom s/steel 2.25' system with 2 free flowing silencers so its not to noisy and i notice an improvement on throttle response straight away. don't believe the hype about u need bigger intercoolers an exhaust. u can remap a completely standard aum engine to about 180-190 bhp no problems.

A aum with just filter and recirc valve will map to 210ish bhp.
But side mount uprated or not will be on its limits at 230bhp and it may be ok getting 230 on one dyno run but try doing 4 runs in one stint and see if you still get 230 on the fourth... The fact is there jut isn't enough flow of cool air to cool the intake air and with the bigger cooler there is even less wheel arch mod or no wheel arch mod.
The unwritten rule with fmic's is don't buy a ready made pipe kit off the bay as they are rubbish follow the guides an build your!

And also dot believe figure that your "local corner garage" quote go to reputable companies like r-tech or similar for mapping and places like dynodaze for dyno runs (places with proven reliable results)

its also a noble service centre.

as for doing 4 rolling road run when in normal driving situation would u put ur engine under that sort of forces. everything i stated in my last post comes from friends an people that no what there talking about.

^^^ Hit the nail on the head!

My AUM mapped to around 210bhp with just recirc valve and panel filter and that was on Carbon's rollers. Since then i've added a 3" exhaust including decat and downpipe, venair TIP and boost hoses.

Without a FMIC I don't expect to see any more than about 215bhp next time I'm on a RR. I think even with a turbo revs SMIC I'd struggle to break the 220bhp mark.

I would class that best tuners as those that specialise in a certain field such as type Of engine ect.
Yes someone can know about tuning
But they can't know everything about everything!  And I didn't see the letters "VAG" anywhere in that post

And as for doing 4 rolling road runs....your not driving it properly
And I would rather have the set up that still peforms after the 4 runs then one which doesn't

Missed this before. Have you ever operated a car on a dyno? Believe me, taking a car from 1k rpm to near the limiter in 3rd doesn't take very long. If you're having a 'spirited' drive, you could quite easily replicate that over a few miles on the road.

i agree but that would put u over 90mph an how many times can u do that on one stretch of road in 3rd all the time ur mpg would be sh!t, also i like having my driving license.
