I know this might not look like your sensor but have a read of the symptoms and tell me if you having similar problems.http://www.aa1car.com/library/air_temp_sensors.htm

What is the fault code from VCDS? And if a bracket on the backbox is a problem then a quick bending session may sort it. If it's snapped off but everything else looks fine I'm sure there'll be someone local that could weld it back together with ease :)

Im at this point with mine, but will persevere with it as I know it'll be a good car when I'm eventually finished with it :D

As said, mk3's are relatively simple cars and most problems are generally simple fixes

Right,in the pic i don't see any wires coming out of the plug that sits on top of that little round cylinder to the left of the MAF sensor.Plus is that white thing that looks like its plugged into the shoulder of the filter connected to anything ?

Well where that little white filter is should be where your air intake temperature sensor is plugged in.That sends a message to the ECU to tell it the air temperature so it can determine the air/fuel mixture.Have you had a problem with excess fuel use, misfire on cold days, stuttering on acceleration in cold weather ?

The sensor is about £25 from GSF.You should have a cable down to the left of the small cylinder that orignally had the sensor attached to it.Mine are taped together with the MAF sensor cable.

you could end up chucking loads of money at  it replacing parts, seems strange that it was ok then you have left it off road for 4months and all of a sudden you have a running issues! might be worth before you spend a arm and leg checking all connections for damp, cleaning all sensor connections.bet it turns out to be something that you have over looked!...have you not got a golf guru up your neck of the woods that could help? hope you get to the bottom of it fella
