IMO Be very careful with throwing yet MORE money at this...

I did this a few years ago with a 88 GTI I bought for £250.00 and after I had it sorted and made saleable - I caught a serious cold & HAD to break it in the end, as it was the only way I could get my money back....

Have a "serious" think about it before getting deeper into the money pit you have already...

No one wants to break a MK2 but if it's got a shot shell you have to seriously consider it and look at it as keeping other 20+ year old cars running...

Stripped many shells back to bare metal. I would reshell it or break it tbh. Yes you can repair it but that is a money pit if you can't do the work yourself.

What do you mean by Re-shell it??? I have never understood this comment...

You can't buy a new shell & even if you could the cost would be way beyond the figures that the OP is looking at??

Id go for re shell aswell that's what I wish I'd done with my old one.
Seen them go for scrap value and then you can just put all your parts and engine you spent money on into that.

Well to talk of breaking a car for a few crusty bits, is ridiculous, however I do apreciate if you can't do it yourself then it is going to be expensive...

I would be very interested in the ms hardware ...

I'll just get a price  from my mechanic, get it mot'd then go from there. Would of been ready for mot if I hadnt of been bumped by "phil miller" on here. £30, guess he needs it more than me. :undecided:

AS you said clipper, I may get the back end done first then wait a while to do the front, as tbh the front isnt carrying on being rusted if it isnt get wet like if I was driving it.

Well if it was me the angle grinder wire brush comes out and then I start taking loose bits of rust and bad metal out . Then de-rust all clean edges and give it some zinc primer afterwards to seal it.
You can do a lot to stop the rot from spreading yourself TBF at the end of the day the welder has clean metal to weld with, as he was going to cut out bad bits anyway. But at least you will stop the rot from spreading any further!
I've done it with my arches and boot even did some small filler work.
